She's the kind of cat who'll abandon a toy mid-play just for some cuddles and pets, purring loudly the moment attention comes her way.

When your modeling subject is a tuxedo cat, the first thing they need is a place to hide. In this case, under a white fur floor drop. It can do triple duty as a safe place for them, a "keep them in place" tool for the photographer, while also adding interest to the image.

As Ethel warmed up, we peeled back her protective covering to reveal a more of her pretty little self. Just think glamorous starlet in a white fur coat instead of moderately terrified kitty partially hiding under a blanket.

We finally talked Ethel into being on top of the white fluffy blanket instead of under it, but she never really relaxed enough to appreciate all my attempts to get her comfy with the situation. She didn't even care for the tuna puree--with anchovies! She will make a fantastic home cat once she has a place to be that she can call her own.

Toast is 1-2 years old, and weighs practically nothing at all. He is a small tan and white dog with a white blaze down the face, a small black nose, and big, soulful dark eyes, standing against a plain white studio background.

A small tan and white Chihuahua mix, the classic breed trait of bonding fiercely to one chosen person written all over that watchful expression. His lips are tilted in an almost sneer, surely a product of having just had a treat.

Dash for Cash was shy until treats came out. Leashed to keep him in place, he caught on fast and rocked the rest of the session. Dash is an utterly charming and handsome Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a beautiful full tail! The standard for the breed includes a cropped tail which is particularly useful if you're herding cattle. Despite that Dash currently lives in Oklahoma, he's unlikely to be working on a ranch so his full length tail shouldn't cause any cattle related issues.

Dash is about 2 years old and 20 lbs. A perfect size for those that can’t manage a big dog, but don’t care for a little dog. Corgi’s have big dog energy inside a smaller package!

Zanna is a beautiful tri-colored Australian Shepherd, probably full-blood. She's 3 years old, 60 lbs, and maybe needs a lot of good workouts, a green bean diet, or both.

If you're a runner or an active person or family, Zanna is ready to attend all your outdoor activities with you. She's a working dog and she needs a job!

Thankfully, as a chi-mix, he's too short to be a counter-surfer.

Oakley is an all reddish brown petite dog with short flop ears, and eyes almost the same color as his fur, only wiser. He has a bit of a wrinkled look to him, maybe an indication of some sharpei in the woodshed. Currently quite shy unless treats are involved and they definitely help him come out of his shell.

Olivia is a pocket bully breed, possibly with some Frenchie mix for good measure. She is petite and very good natured.

Her super buff shoulders and narrow hind end makes her look like a gym rat who consistently skips leg day. Her ears have been tightly cropped. I am consistently horrified that people still choose to mutilate dogs for some weird esthetic.

With one tipped ear, long white whiskers, and calm yellow eyes, Wilma has unique tortoiseshell markings including a lot of red/orange on her torso and tail.

Can you imagine waking up to this frank stare first thing in the morning? C'mon with the tuna already!

There were many shy cats in the studio for this round of foster portraits, but not Wilma. She sauntered around like these were here new digs and she had absolutely no hesitation about modeling. Gotta love a confident cat!

That's a wrap on the August Foster Portrait weekend! 11 appointments, 23 animals, and the final ratio: 16 cats to 7 dogs. Everyone posed on white this weekend while we tested a new floor drop — a total win for the dogs, though a few cats had complaints. #catsofbluesky

My brother’s cat Ravi came in for a glow-up session and immediately looked for the exit. So we pivoted! I moved my light 90° and joined him on top of the mantel. Even shy, spicy kitties can be photographed beautifully with a little patience! (He even let me hold him after.) #catsofbluesky

She started as the tiniest kitten in the litter and has since fully leaned into her role as the one in charge. Nobody argues with her about it.

Rescued when her family lost their home, her mama was adopted a couple weeks ago — and now this ten-week-old boss is ready to take over a home of her own.

Bitty is the smallest of her litter, and a fluffy calico with the most beautiful markings. Like a harlequin, her coloring alternates yellow and and black and switches left to right from her ears, then her face, then her front paws. Her little nose is a black triangle framed with white. She is sitting up tall on a blue background and wears a rather serious expression.

Was able to catch Einstein mid-meow. Looks a lot like mid-hiss, but he wasn't in the least spicy. Just chatty.

This funny, sweet nine-week-old earned his name honestly — big head, spectacular wild hair, and an endearing personality that makes you laugh and then immediately want to snuggle him.

His mama was adopted just last Friday. Now it's Einstein's turn to find a family who appreciates both his intellect and his incredible hair. 😄

This two-month-old black kitten was found outside near a highway — possibly tumbled from a passing car — but her confidence suggests she has never once considered that a problem.

She came in fully social and has been demanding love and attention at maximum intensity ever since.

Her foster family calls her a stage 5 clinger. Having spent a session with her, I can confirm this is accurate and also extremely charming.

Nick was an absolute natural in front of my camera — the kind of cat who works every angle like he's done this a hundred times. Total pro. It's hard to believe he'd just been returned to foster care the day before, after his new family discovered an allergy. You'd never know it looking at him now.
