Oh my. These were in the first of two boxes of midcentury novels, all VG+ to F, most first printings or first thus. A few weren't as memorable, but others....

Seven books by everybody's favorite expatriate literary lepidopterist, Vladimir Nabokov, including Lolita, Bend Sinister, The Defense, Speak, Memory (an autobiography), Despair, Invitation to a Beheading, and Nabokov's Dozen (a short story collection). All but the last have relatively consistent design elements typical of the 1960s in America. The mostly white dust jackets are remarkably well preserved. Prices range from $40 up

Does anyone else remember Chicago group from (gestures wildly) early 80s with this name? I used to see their flyers all the time but never saw them live and then met their singer in Oklahoma City decades later. (Saw Anger showing this and others in Albuquerque with his traveling screenings)

Trivia: the Steve Miller on this is, obviously, not THE Steve Miller but was the keyboard player for a band called Linn County (which is the county for Cedar Rapids, Iowa) who I believe had a Mother Earth-ish album on Mercury.

Looking at Miller-Meeks Wikipedia page and write-in totals are wild! 36 in '18, 703 in '20 (when she won by 6 votes), 256 in '22 (won by 20K) and 967 in '24 (won by 800).

I spent a little time academic press-adjacent and I can appreciate the fact that title X is going to sell in the hundreds, not thousands, but it's not like they have to earn back huge advances!

010

Joel Dilley @okiedharmabum.bsky.social · 13/10/2026

Well, yes, but the other titles mentioned on the page are all $80+ paperbacks as well and if university presses are just raising prices across the board it will inhibit the very occasional academic title (Eros, the bittersweet) that escapes back into the wild. I need to peruse some U press websites!

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

A north-facing entrance supports prosperity and happiness, while an east-facing entrance promotes wealth and spiritual growth. If your main entrance faces south or west and you’ve been experiencing financial or health issues since living there, try using a side or back entrance, if available.
