For Hazel Granata, the arts became a reason to stay in school. At the start of the semester, she was thinking about dropping out and getting her GED. Then she talked with her theater teacher. “Art gives me a reason to show up and be at school.”

What does arts education look like at your school? For some students, it’s choir. For others, it’s dance, theater, orchestra, visual art or technical theater. Whatever the program, having something to look forward to can make a difference.

Not every student finds their place on stage. Some find it backstage. For Abigail Dake, technical theater has given her a place to belong, build teamwork skills and do something she loves. “The arts provide the same team building opportunities to kids like me who are differently abled.”

Shelly Black has seen students find a reason to stay in school through the arts. As an art and music teacher at Warner Public Schools, she has watched students grow through choir and band. “I have students who wouldn’t have graduated if not for choir and band.”

Whether a student grows up to be a graphic designer, a civil engineer, a surgeon, or a small business owner, the arts build the foundation for critical thinking, adaptability, and complex problem-solving, which are important skills Oklahoma’s workforce requires. #OK4Arts #ArtsEdOK #OklahomaEconomy

Public art projects are the result of deliberate policy, civic partnerships, and community investment. In OK, framework policies like the Oklahoma Art in Public Places Act ensure that 1.5% of eligible capital improvement budgets are reinvested into public art.

The Oklahoma Arts Council does the on-the-ground work of supporting arts across our state, funding local programs, arts education, and creative economies in every county. But as a state agency, it can't use public funds to lobby or rally citizens for its own budget. That's where OFTA comes in.

What did the 4th of July look like over 200 yrs. ago? From our earliest days, Americans have gathered in public spaces to celebrate through music, art, and community gatherings. Our celebrations, concerts, and public art events are the spaces where community is built.

For Shannon Lockwood, the arts teach something students don’t often learn elsewhere: how to keep going when it’s hard. “In music, the standard isn’t just getting by. It’s doing something well,” Lockwood says. Those lessons shape how students approach school, careers and life. #OFTA #ArtsEducation

When we invest in the arts, we invest in the American worker, their story, and community. During the darkest days of the Dust Bowl and the Depression, it was federal and state arts funding (like the WPA) that kept our creative workforce employed, documenting life at the time.
