Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 24/08/2026The e-scooters here in Norway have some kind of reaction-time drunkenness test which kicks in at 10pm. They also shut down completely at midnight. But I'm not sure the companies would be inclined to run the tests earlier, say at rush hour, even people are still absolutely on the sauce by then. 100
Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 06/08/2026It ignores the pretty problematic warlike approach to fire that partly got us here, and fails to acknowledge how profoundly damaging to the Earth system war itself is. To say war is the only thing that can mobilise a population is total imaginative bankruptcy. 000
Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 06/08/2026I understand the urgency and horror of the author's position. But framing fire as an enemy force - rather than an intrinsic part of the Earth system - just serves to further alienate our relationship with it. 100
Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 06/08/2026After bad wildfires, pollies love to say they're buying airtankers, or helicopters, even though fire brigades are usually be better served by better PPE or training or even just a working a black and white printer - because a 'wartime mindset' is the only kind of optics they can countenance. 100
Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Deeply misguided to talk this way. Casting wildfires as an enemy has been the M.O. for governments and insurers for a very long time - fire has always been a force to be 'fought'. Many surplus WWII aircraft went directly into service for forestry agencies. 100

Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 17/07/2026Thanks for the article, Zeke. You point to the fact that ignitions are overwhelming coming from lightning, but is there not a direct relationship between thunderstorm likelihood/severity and atmospheric warming, the latter of which we know is anthropogenically forced? 100

Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 14/07/2026In hindsight it is very obvious that as models improve and the simulation of (and even attribution of agency to) wildfires becomes possible that this data would be immediately become the basis for gambling. www.wired.com/story/predic...wired.comPrediction Markets Let You Bet on Whether a Wildfire Will Burn Down Your TownWildfire survivors call fire-prediction markets “morally reprehensible” and worry they could increase the risk of arson. 000

Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 24/05/2026There's something so conspiratorial to this feeling - the idea that Disney has it out for the real fans, has only contempt for the golden age - which is at odds with the fact that Star Wars was from its beginning an ad hoc, narratively inconsistent means to sell toys 010

Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 10/01/2025But the speed at which we now demand digital maps, especially in journalism, means that cloud obscuration is back - there's no time to wait for a clear day. Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 10/01/2025Today, clouds have almost disappeared from the stable, seamless 'mosaics' that are the background layers for platforms like Google Maps. Oskar Johanson @ojohanson.bsky.social · 10/12/2024Schroeder skewers his colonials, who trick themselves with a kind of hippie truth-seeking until it is too late.
