also the way it is rendered is very cute. the kanji for "two" in "nii" but "san" in hiragana like it it is a polite suffix following a name, with "ichiban" in katakana

There you go
Why I don’t like Onimusha 2026, the short version:

My high water marks for action combat games are God Hand, Ninja Gaiden II, Bare Knuckle III, Resident Evil 4/5, Final Fight, etc. these games share a prioritization of space management and forethought over reaction/timing checks. Some of them rely on combos/strings but generically this collection of games cares more about 1) where you are, and 2) where you’re going, than they do about how well you can push buttons. Onimusha and most action games these days are built primarily around reflex/reaction/animation reads. Parries, I-frame dodges, etc etc. Mechanics like these were always in Onimusha but they certainly weren’t as plentiful or relatively easy to pull off as they are in the new game.

Also enemies politely queue for their turn to attack you and I just think that’s embarrassing

Really good post about the growth mindset that can lead to success in Marathon (source: www.reddit.com/r/Marathon/s...)
Spamming Cryo has made me a better player.

Generally in Season 1 and even the start of this Season, I was pretty afraid of Cryo. It's an insanely complex map, and I don't want to let down my team but not knowing how to rotate properly with them. On top of this, I struggled to remember how to do all the different vaults.

However, thanks to Vault Breaker, I gained the confidence to start to queue more Cryo. I knew how to do the vaults, but it doesn't teach you much about how Cryo actually plays, since you have to consider other players being on the map hunting you.

As a result, I got wiped over and over on Cryo to start. But slowly, through crew fill, I got some of the rotations down. Then came the true learning curve: *the decision making*.

Decision making is what either breaks you, or gets you those peak goop runs. You need to be tactical, decisive, and your team *needs* to stick together and be on the same page. Through this process you learn how to work better with your team whether it's friends or randoms.

Before I would spam Cryo on the weekends, every fight felt like I just needed to keep peeking and eventually through a coin toss I'd win or lose the fight. What I've learned is it's okay to run away, back up, rotate to another area completely to take a different angle, so on and so forth. It's made me a better player on the other maps, as I know when someone has the advantage in a fight and when to reposition to gain leverage over my opponent or leave them wondering where I am.

**Here's a longer story to describe this kind of thinking in action:**

My team was pushing from the terminal room on the 2nd floor of Revival, right next to Vault 1. We pushed out towards Control. We had 2 Recons (I was one of them), and a Triage. I scanned, and we found that two teams were fighting each other. Our Triage made the mistake of dropping down, and he got instantly evaporated.

**This is where decision making mattered most.** After realizing there was now a team with 1 player down above them, the team that fried our Triage started to push towards us. But we had already decided to back up, and hold an angle on the door from Control. I had the Ares RG, so I held the door with that while the other Recon held it with his Bully. (By the way, shout out to the Ares, that thing is goated for situations where you need to hold an angle in a mid range fight).

They kept peeking, and I'd crack them with the Ares while my teammate tried to finish them off. We backed up further back to the screen room in Revival as we thought they might try to rotate all the way through Revival to flank us. After 30 seconds, we moved back towards Control. They heard us coming, and we knew that. So, we had the same plan as before. We heard shots, so it was clear the other team was still fighting them. One of them peeked our angle, and this time we managed to shoot him at the same time. He was down in less than a second. We thirsted him, then pushed up a bit. It was clear that this team was getting pressured by the other team. A 2nd one peeked, and we managed to down him in the same fashion. Ares + Bully to the dome. We took more space with these downs. The other team finished off this team's 3rd, but they were all Blue shields we soon found out after scanning. So, we decided to go for a rez. I held the door with my Ares while the other Recon got our Triage up. They kept trying to peek, but I'd throw my crab and crack them with the Ares. We got our Triage up, and for the sake of not having this be even more long-winded, I'll just say that us backing up and holding angles and waiting for the right moment to push was what won us the lobby. We wiped the other team decisively, and were able to loot Vault 1 and get the Trace. Massive Dub.

**Play Cryo. I know it's intimidating for a lot of players, but I promise that once you start to understand things about the map better, and you engage in more PvP, Marathon as a whole opens up and it adds a whole new dimension to the game.**

Anyways, I just felt like sharing this bit of advice for players. You will lose *a lot*, but in the end, the confidence and experience you gain through Cryo is invaluable and teaches you some great lessons to take into raids on other maps as well.
