I saw this painting among others at the Menil Collection art museum in Houston,TX. It was such a beautiful and unexpected piece that I couldn’t help but stare in appreciation of the gentleness so often ignored in depictions featuring African people of this time.

In case anyone is wondering why despite Texas regularly being wrecked by natural disasters, our Emergency Management department’s response time gets slower and slower, look at the contrast of Senate proposed bill for the 2024-2025 year and the Appropriations Request sent to the Governor by the TDEM:

Highlighted text: “Decrease of $89,605,457 in Other Funds, as Disaster Deficiency Emergency Grants from the Office of the Governor are not estimated for 2024-25, because the costs incurred by future disasters are unknown.”

grant funding is seeing significant budget reductions. Even when grant resources remain relatively flat, purchasing power is lost due to inflation while the costs and frequency of events are increasing. With the reduction in federal funding, due to federal funding cuts in the Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) program, additional agency support from the state will be necessary to carry out agency functions”
