Excited to be at #WikiConferenceNA in Edmonton this weekend. Find @mxn to hear about how OpenHistoricalMap can be a partner to #Wikipedia in the campaign against #recentism in the digital humanities.
A pile of stickers for OpenHistoricalMap, some showing a diff removing the text WP:RECENT, others saying it isn’t a real map if it doesn’t have a time slider. Nearby on the same table are stickers for the Internet Archive and some Edmonton postcards.

That’s the good news. The bad news is the influx of extant features has cut the average age of a dated element in half, to only 50 years, and the average year in OHM shifted from 1960 to 1992.

September is almost over and we didn’t post #OpenHistoricalMap statistics for August yet! Since the start of August, we added 3.9 million dated elements, more than doubling what we had before. That includes 1.6 million more buildings and 17,192¼ more railroad miles than we had before. #HockeyStick

Steady linear growth from 1 million in May 2022 to 2.5 million in March 2026, followed by some spurts up to 3.5 million by July, then finally a spike in August and September up to 7.5 million.

Welp, I'm joining the ranks of the unemployed tech workers again. As before, I'm in a good situation. I don't depend on my former employer for health insurance. I've got some severance and savings, my family is in good health, we have a roof over our heads, and I have good connections. I don't feel afraid. But maybe I should? The job market is worse than last time this happened to me. I've seen experienced and talented people go for weeks and months without offers, and read some harrowing stories about what under-employment looks like for older tech workers these days. After a little detour into the biomedical field, I'm looking to get back into helping to solve important geospatial problems. If you've got them, please let me know.
