Banks need a way to determine if they're lending money to my shitty uncle who owes my dad about 10k, or my other uncle who pays all his debts up front the second be can afford it. One is a liability, one isnt... but it's stupid how having a 745 is worse than a 746.

In my opinion, credit scores are a little bit necessary. Not to be extent that they are now, and I hate how much one purchase or mindless mistake can bankrupt you.. but it's useful for big loans or expensive vehicles where the bank needs a way to determine your trustworthiness.
