We've spent the last couple weeks deep diving on the permissioned spaces proposal and what it means for Habitat's use case! We plan to release a formalized spec on what we're building soon, but in the mean time appreciate any thoughts on our design.

@chrispardy.dev you should check out @habitat.network esp our most recent post! super similar to what you're talking about here in terms of making something that looks like a "mini atmosphere" for groups. habitat is a bit lighter weight than that and can still federate with the global network

i feel this so hard. a realization i had about my career is that i'm basically trying to build towards a world where people build and use technology on their own terms, rather than get used by it. user data ownership is a starting point, but it extends far beyond that.

been reflecting lately on how atproto enables new shapes of computing infrastructure that look different from both what we see in the mainstream web and in the global atproto network. the question my mind goes to next is: how do we make these alternative infrastructures sustainable long-term?

circling back to this because i think it's both! just used @microcosm.blue in conjunction with @habitat.network to quickly get a feature working that needs public + private data intermingled (local-first / without an appview)

but i do think making local-first in atproto easy to build / reliable / usable means growing shared infra in the ecosystem (like microcosm), or making PDS providers a bit beefier. we're going the latter route.

we're trying to formalize this into a proper package, we have a prototyped peer-discovery protocol for permissioned data that only lets you connect to authenticated (via service auth / DID) peers. anyways i think atproto has a lot of potential in local-first, will give your essay a read!
