I’ve never seen a USPS utility truck and trailer before. It was filled with construction barricades and orange cones. And there’s no license plate?

In Minnesota, everyone had one of these in their car, and you could buy them at most gas stations, which was also a place you could reliably ask for directions. Hudson Maps even had a store on Nicollet!

They're out here doing this fuckshit, meanwhile they have high-use pages and forms that look like this. Start with the fucking basics!
State department's passport application portal. All the text and background colors are on the left half of the page. The right half is blank. There are so many design issues that I'm listing them at the end so you can skip it if you trust me that it's really bad.
Still here? Okay, so the color palette is yellow and blue, theres an image of a bunch of what must be passport-related docs spread out on a white surface. There are three columns of text, the first of which has a slightly arched top that cuts off the corner edges of the header. Turns out that is meant to convey that you need to hover over each column to see added info for each column. The three columns are Fill Out Online and Print (in title case, which is not the USDS style guideline), Report Lost or Stolen, and Check Status. The text that appears above Report Lost or Stolen is black on a dark yellow background, which I'd be surprised if it meets color contrast minimums. You have to hover on a column to see that there's an action button for each of them. That button says the same thing in each column: Submit. That's not the expected action here, though.
Also the buttons look like they're from the 90s, but not in a cool way.PDF of the Application for a US Passport. It looks like it's in 6 pt font with line spacing at .8.

Why surround yourself with folks like this if you yourself lack the courage of your convictions? I’m posting the QT-ed images above so I can add alt

I assume I'll hear back from these folks in about a week, if the pattern holds. I have to respect their calm demeanor in the face of all those knife emojis.
Text exchange that begins on September 2:
Them: Your case is a book with the last chapter missing. Ten minutes and we finish it.
Morning or afternoon?"

Me (in all caps and ending with three knife emojis): "TEN MINUTES AND WE FINISH IT"
Follow up messages from them 9 days later: "You ever get a message, think you replied but, you really replied in your head? That's what I'll assume happened here <smile>
Now or tomorrow easier?"
Me (again in all caps, but this time with a knife between each word) TEN MINUTES AND WE FINISH IT

This copy from the restaurant’s website, however, is ridiculous. "Families arrived in America carrying recipes, techniques and traditions from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.” Uh, I think you forgot a few places where people came from (never mind who was already here).
Appalachia Resttaurant web copy:

SOME STORIES TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME.
The foodways of Appalachia began long before Appalachia itself.
Families arrived in America carrying recipes, techniques and traditions from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. In the mountains of Eastern America, those traditions met unfamiliar landscapes, different seasons and new ingredients.
Over time, they became something else.
Not British. Not American. Something in between.
Appalachia is inspired by that evolution.

Need to shake off the ick of AI talk, so here’s some art I made tonight. I secretly believe collage is one of the most AI-proof media because it only knows how to be random on accident, not on purpose.
Collage with illustration of a mourning dove under a slightly transparent piece of handcrafted paper, a photo of Robin Williams on stage in the 70s, and a quote by Henri Bergson: "A veil slides between us and nature, indeed between us and our own consciousness: thick for the ordinary man, almost transparent for the artist and the poet.
Which deity has woven it, and was it done hostilely or beneficently? It was a matter of life, and life requires that we understand things in relation to our needs”
