you know i'm actually really proud of my anatomy in the val piece. this wasn't just using a reference (though i used plenty, to be sure), there were several times i had to work through what his arm and hands were doing. how exactly his stomach and legs connect. it was rly good practice.

that was my interpretation as well! it would have been just after we can reasonably guess he started hypnotizing him (i always read it as him asking val in poison, and being seen actually doing it in that flashback). it also answers the question of why angel's asking smth similar from the pilot.
