🌑 Moonlessly (Insomnia poetry)
moonlessly

the universe

has declined

to provide
an explanation

predictably

we provided
several

seriously

we wrote them down

and killed one another

over punctuation

patiently

the stones

remained
unpersuaded

locally

someone

held a door
for someone else

temporarily

this seemed

more useful

cosmically

nothing changed

personally

I think

that may have been
the point

moonlessly

For One Day #poetry
suppose for one day

we did not finish
what was handed to us

the sentence
already begun

before our birth

the old grievances

the map with its careful
wounds

the names
for those who belong

and those
who do not

suppose a fist

unclenched

and whatever
it was grasping

fell

quietly

no great
forgiveness

no sudden love
among strangers

only the strange
weightlessness

of having nothing
to pass on

there would still be
morning

the trucks
on the road

people going
about their lives

someone washing
blood

from a cloth

someone calling
across a field

and perhaps

for a while

we would not know

what to do
with ourselves

without the injury
we inherited

and learned
to tend

without the enemy

whose face
had become

a kind of mirror

how much
of what we are

requires
our repetition

the insult
remembered

the border
walked again

the story
told to the child

who had not yet
learned

to hate

and listened

because we
were the ones

telling it

i do not mean
we would become good

i no longer know

what such a sentence
could mean

i mean only

there might come
an hour

when the old machinery

waited

and no hand
reached

for the lever

the earth
would not notice

our restraint

the grass would lean
under its own green weight

ants would cross
the stone

rain would enter
the open places

without knowing
what had ended

and somewhere

a child

would inherit
nothing

for once

nothing

and have to begin

Still #poetry
there’s something about
the late august sun

under the trees

the wind

moving through

the high leaves

something
so close

and already
far away

I am walking

then

running

the ground warm

under
my bare feet

someone
behind me

laughing

the voice

so near

but there is only

the long grass
leaning now

where the path
used to be

still

I run

without knowing

how far

a life could go

and still, the rain fell #poetry
and still , the rain fell

there must have been

whole afternoons

no one remembers

rain passing
through the leaves

a field
darkening

then brightening again

wind moving
through the grass

with no one there
to call it wind

and perhaps

this is most
of the world

what happened
without entering

a story

what opened
and vanished

without leaving
a name

even in our own lives

how little
we carry

a few faces

a road after rain

someone turning
toward us

one evening
that somehow remained

while around it

years disappeared

without resistance

but they were there

the forgotten mornings

the unremembered light

all that we were
when no one

not even we

were keeping watch

and still

the rain fell
