⚠️ Shell made profits of $9.84bn (£7.4bn) from April to June. This was the same period that saw fossil-fuelled deadly heatwaves across Europe, and soaring energy costs for households. Their profits, our loss. It’s time to turn this around, and make Shell pay for the damage they cause.

The ruling against TotalEnergies is further confirmation that fossil fuel companies can no longer expect to get away with ignoring the climate impacts of their business. Accountability is coming.

Attribution science has shown us that the biggest polluters have each produced enough emissions to cause several heatwaves of a magnitude that would have been “almost impossible” without climate change. (Source: www.nature.com/articles/s41...)

Systematic attribution of heatwaves to the emissions of carbon majors - Nature
Climate change made 213 historical heatwaves reported over 2000–2023 more likely and more intense, to which each of the 180 carbon majors (fossil fuel and cement producers) substantially contributed.

The fact that this judgement has been given in Paris as the city swelters in 40ºC heat underlines the importance of this ruling.

Once TotalEnergies has reworked its plan, the court will reassess whether further orders are needed requiring the company to do more to reduce its emissions.

These obligations include the emissions resulting from the combustion of oil and gas products (known as Scope 3), the source of almost 90% of their emissions. TotalEnergies now has six months to account for these emissions, and set out how it will address the harm from those emissions.

‼️ BREAKING: a French court has just ruled that multinational oil giant TotalEnergies has legal climate obligations under the French Duty of Vigilance Law - which it has so far failed to fulfil.

This week, it will be hotter in the UK than the Philippines. Summer has barely begun, and parts of the UK are under a red alert for extreme heat. This is not normal. Climate change has made every heatwave today more likely and more intense. This is why we fight for accountability.

It’s still springtime and the UK has just had a “tropical night”. This is extreme weather, and 1) we’re going to see more of it 2) we’re not ready for it 3) fossil fuels are to blame 4) oil giants have known this for decades. Follow the Odette Case and support the fight for accountability.

Over 100 people in the Philippines are saying enough - they lost everything to a typhoon fuelled by climate change, and now they are suing Shell for the damage. It's high time Shell uses its obscene profits to pay its share for the disaster it helped to create. Add your name >> bit.ly/42mNsbH

Fossil fuel profits aren't just lining the pockets of the super rich, they're destroying lives - whether that's through oil wars, or the climate disasters they're igniting.
