Went to London over the weekend for the Japan Matsuri 2026 and it was great. I love being around Japanese culture, even if it's a tiny amount. However, I've been so pooped ever since, it's taken everything out of me. I need to get a shift on with my writing and my brain is like noooooooooooooooooooo

I guess it depends on which stage. Before it's finished I want more what's "wrong" so I can focus on fixing it with a bonus yay you enjoyed it. But once I'm done it flips because fixing a finish product is harder especially when it feels done in my head. Then I wanna hear the good stuff 😆

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I really need to hear what people like, to boost my confidence in my writing and to know what I have written people actually enjoy. However, more critically, knowing what didn't work can help me in future. If I don't get A then B might not happen

The gate of Bishamontang, Emissary Santo, Yamashina District, Kyoto City
Framed by a blazing canopy of Japanese maples (momiji), a steep stone pathway (chokushimichi) rises toward a dark wooden gate, its steps completely buried beneath a thick carpet of scarlet foliage. Slender bamboo handrails flank the stone stairs, leading the eye along a dramatic linear perspective toward the imperial messenger gate at the crest of the slope. Overhead, interlocking branches filter the light, casting a warm crimson glow over the damp stone and moss-covered embankments. The scene evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the crisp mountain air of a Kyoto morning, the faint scent of damp moss and aged cedar, the soft crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, and the profound, reverent hush of an ancient temple precinct.
Located at Bishamon-do Temple in the Yamashina District of Kyoto, this approach—known as the chokushimichi (Imperial Messenger Path)—is renowned for its late-autumn sando (shrine approach), where fallen leaves form an iconic momiji no jūtan (maple carpet). Originally founded in 703 AD by the monk Gyōki and re-established at its present site in 1665, Bishamon-dō is a distinguished monozeki temple (traditionally presided over by members of the imperial family or high nobility). The Chokushimon Gate at the top of the stairs was reserved for official imperial envoys, reflecting the sanctuary's esteemed lineage. The seamless integration of stone masonry, timber architecture, and natural forest contours reflects the supreme craft of Japanese zōen (landscape architecture) and monozukuri (artisanal mastery), designed to celebrate the subtle shifts of the seasonal calendar.

Some days, the writing just does not happen, for various reasons. Sometimes it lasts a bit longer than that. I'm not having a good time right now, but at least I have Phoebe and this picture is so pretty. How can she look so effortlessly cool? Cats surely have the best lives.
Picture is of a bengal cat who has brown and ginger fur with white patches across the whiskers and jaw. She's looking at the camera giving a look of "I'm very cool", because she is.

This vertical image displays a stunning kimono from the "Symphony of Light" series by the renowned Japanese textile artist Itchiku Kubota. Created in 1981, this specific work is part of a larger, ambitious collection designed to reflect Kubota's deep admiration for nature and the transformative power of changing light. Kubota is celebrated for reviving and modernizing tsujigahana, a complex 15th-century dyeing and decorating technique that had been lost for centuries.

The kimono features a luminous, golden landscape that appears to depict a rising or setting sun partially obscured by horizontal cloud formations. The upper portion of the garment is dominated by brilliant, pale gold and silver tones, suggesting high-altitude light, while the lower sections transition into rich ambers, oranges, and deep ochres. The texture of the fabric is highly detailed, showcasing the characteristic pinched and dyed effects of the tsujigahana method, which creates a three-dimensional, almost sculptural quality on the silk surface.

This series was intended to eventually encompass 80 kimonos that, when displayed side-by-side, would form a panoramic "Symphony of Light" across the seasons and hours of the day.

another masterwork from the "Symphony of Light" series by the renowned Japanese textile artist Itchiku Kubota. 2 of 5
another masterwork from the "Symphony of Light" series by the renowned Japanese textile artist Itchiku Kubota. This creation continues the series' thematic exploration of nature and the shifting qualities of light through the seasons, showcasing Kubota's unique ability to render expansive landscapes across the medium of the kimono. The garment is a prime example of his modernized tsujigahana technique, which combines intricate tie-dyeing, brush painting, and embroidery to achieve a rich, multi-layered texture.

The composition of this kimono depicts a majestic mountain range bathed in a warm, ethereal glow. The upper portion and the sleeves feature vibrant hues of orange, gold, and pale yellow, suggesting the light of a late afternoon or early autumn day. Moving down the garment, the colors transition into cooler, deeper tones of forest green, teal, and a dark, shadowy purple at the very bottom left. These lower sections appear to depict the silhouettes of dense trees and foliage rising from a misty valley, providing a grounded contrast to the luminous peaks above.

Kubota's mastery of light is evident in the way the colors seem to shimmer and blend seamlessly, mimicking the natural atmospheric perspective found in traditional ink wash paintings. The detailed surface texture, created by the labor-intensive tsujigahana process, gives the landscape a tangible depth, as if the mountain slopes and treetops are physically emerging from the silk. This piece serves as a testament to Kubota's vision of creating a grand "symphony" that honors the ever-changing beauty of the Japanese wilderness.

A performer in a Noh costume, one of Japan's oldest traditional theatrical arts. Noh is a comprehensive art form that combines music, dance, literature, and sculpture through its iconic masks.
This image captures a performer draped in a sumptuously detailed Noh costume, a central element of one of the world's oldest continuous theatrical traditions. The actor wears a deep indigo kariginu (broad-sleeved cloak) adorned with gold-leaf paulownia motifs and vibrant floral sprays, layered over a gold-patterned koshimaki. The ensemble is completed by an iconic Noh mask, which represents a refined sculptural tradition capable of conveying a vast spectrum of emotion through subtle shifts in the actor’s head position and light.
