I believe that like 80% of the incel movement is just guys taking 60's sitcom writing as God's honest truth. The way they think the world works is insane, but would make perfect sense to Dobie Gillis.

I think that's it. It's not, as others here are saying, that they're rooting for the villains. They don't care about the heroes and the villains. They only care that that one guy can plug a friggin' computer into his friggin' head and how cool is that?!

If you think ai is racist now, just imagine what the public domain version would look like.

Valve have actually said in interviews that it runs surprisingly well in standalone mode. Not to mention that like 80% of the vr games on steam are also on the Quest store and can demonstrably run just fine on standalone.

I've seen multiple people online reinvent runner ducking and and claim it as an ai success story.

I'm a fan of the yt series "What Makes This Song Stink", and while I enjoy the humor, it feels weirder and weirder to me because I don't get worked up over bad songs anymore. The reason for this is that I hardly ever hear songs that I didn't specifically pick.

If it looked like Republicans were down for the count, Dems wouldn't rule forever. The left half of the party would almost immediately either split off into their own party or leave and take over the greens.

I'm not sure about that. Smart evil is not killing the golden goose. It's not ruling with an iron fist, but just skimming little enough that everyone thinks they're doing fine, but you make out like a bandit.

Politicians do what the voters tell them to do. It doesn't matter what Republican politicians say. It matters what undecided voters think they want. If you want dem pols to change their tune, don't yell at them, go convince the voters.

I think if they devoted some effort to fixing the curator system it would go a long way. If implemented properly it could help games find their audiences and gamers find new games, but as it exists now it's useless.

My wife and I used to do audience participation co-op where one of us would play a game and the other would help with puzzles or yell "Potion" when health got low or whatever. I've been playing Blue Prince and would love to do that again, but she can't watch first person games without getting sick.

I tend to follow authors. The odds of me liking a random mystery novel are pretty low. The odds of me liking a Janice Hallett or Seisho Yokomizo approaches 100%

I'm one of those people. I still can't comprehend how anyone could prefer physical books. The only advantage I can see is that I don't thave to remove drm from them. But other than that they're worse in every way.

I think season at a time drops are the best thing ever, and it blows my mind that people can prefer the old way. I usually don't start watching until the season is almost out, which means I get things spoiled, but it's still better than waiting a week between episodes.

Nothing in the original post has anything to do with whether listening to an audiobook is reading or not. Everything he said would apply equally whether it is or isn't.

Is there a books versus audiobooks debate? I've heard a lot of scolding about gatekeeping, but I've never seen or heard anyone suggest that listening to audiobooks is bad or you shouldn't do it.

I think they are inspired by that kind of AI. But they don't know how to make that, so they're selling what they do know how to make and hoping we don't notice the difference.

One of the pile of video game projects I'll probably never finish has you playing a state of the art ai spaceship brain, the first model with full human intelligence. If course since you weigh 8 tons, there's very little room for crew or cargo.

I think there are more positive depictions of AI in fiction than negative. C3p0 was a stick in the mud, but his heart was in the right place, metaphorically speaking. For every Hal from 2001, there's a Clank from ratchet and Clank. I'm not sure which category Bender falls into.

If someone invented the AI from scifi books, I would be more likely to be pro AI than I am now. Right now we have a magic 8 ball and have all collectively decided to pretend it's alive.

Honestly, I think most of them don't even care about that. They just focus tested a lot of different messages and this one found some traction. They don't care why. When I was a kid, everyone was going on and on about people burning the flag. Trans kids playing sports are the new flag burners.

The fact that people aren't always rational may not matter if their irrationalities don't all go in the same direction. Theorizing about what they would do if they were rational can still give you valuable information even if your conclusions end up with error bars around them.

On the other hand, the one thing llms are best at is producing output that looks more useful and correct than it is. So however much a person thinks they're benefitting from an llm, the real amount is probably less than that, even if it's not zero 3/3

octorine.bsky.social @octorine.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
There's a lot of daylight between "useful for some purposes" and "will make you 10x as productive" or "will obsolete all human work", but I'm willing to accept that the weaker claim might be true. Even Cory Doctorow, who has written books debunking ai hype, uses llms for some things. 2/

Hank, as well as other people who are generally regarded as pretty smart and gave accomplished significant things, have said that ai (and by that I mean chatbot and similar chatbots, since that's what 99.99% of people mean when they say ai) is useful for some purposes. 1/

He had the interview with Bernie Sanders a while back where they were both talking about all the amazing things AI can do, so not a complete surprise. Also, he is pretty smart, so maybe he's right about AI and I'm wrong. I don't think so, but maybe.

Is Neal Stephenson conservative? Reading the Ameristan stuff in REAMDE makes that kind of hard to believe. Or the book he co-wrote containing the black woman on government assistance who accidentally ends up in politics because she happens to demolish some Republican on camera.
