Learn about Rylan Gleave in his interview with PRXLUDES, ahead of a performance of his work at PRX.LIVE at The Nest this Friday: prxludes.net/2021/04/05/r... Tix: wegottickets.com/f/23959 Funders: @artscouncilengland.bsky.social @prsfoundation.bsky.social @ppluk.bsky.social
Rylan Gleave: Learn about our featured composer ahead of our performance of "Heartstrings"...I'd say the biggest factor would be hyperfocus. It means I can, and often do, spend up to 14 or 15 hours composing, just getting lost in it...

I can't remember who I described it to, but it's almost like having tendrils that come out of your head; they go into a project, and once they're in there they're really firmly rooted. When you then have to do something else, it's a really slow process of retracting them and bringing them back. I think my transition period between composing and not composing isn't always that smooth, because I'm always stuck in composing mode. The only divide I see in terms of my own practice is notation. No Ashenspire [band] members, apart from our violinist, read sheet music - everyone reads tabs, or learns by ear - whereas I learned Western standard notation, but I'm not a good sight reader. So going from singer to composer, I really had to brush up on those score-reading skills. But going back to working with a band, I [was] totally having to rely on my ears again.

Notation is the way you communicate with other people, right; how you show them your ideas, the clearest way of putting them down. But if you're not trained in that, there's a whole other way of working [to] explain yourself.Friday 25 September, The Nest, Oxford, tickets available now. Aileen Sweeney. Learn about our featured composer ahead of our performance of The Wooden Web...I grew up in a very folk household. I was taken to these Irish music classes, I was taken to Irish dancing classes. That was very much what my understanding of music was for a very long time; obviously, I knew that other things existed, but that was very much my upbringing, and what I considered music to be, essentially.

And it wasn't really until I was about 14 or 15 that I even started looking at "classical" music; but even then, it wasn't really classical music, it was like French musettes and Italian polkas/ It probably wasn't until I was in my final year at school that I actually played something by Bach. So I find that the folk music is very much engrained. It's hard to remember [to] just write stuff that you like - it seems like a simple thing to do, but it is hard. I often hear compoers saying, like, "I don't think about what the audience think" - and I believe those people, I'm sure they don't care - but why would you not care? What would you rather, a concert hall of a thosand people walking out and hating it, or a concert hall of people saying "I really enjoyed your piece"?

I know Stravinsky had riots and all that, but I don't think we're in the day and age of riots. I am thrilled when people come up to me and say "I enjoy your music", so why would I not strive for that? Friday 25 September, The Nest, Oxford. Tickets available now. Come and hear Blasio Kavuma's "Soundclash"at PRX.LIVE this Friday at The Nest. Interview: prxludes.net/2024/11/18/b... Tickets: wegottickets.com/f/23959 Co-promoted by OCM, @prxludes.bsky.social & Stomping Ground. @artscouncilengland.bsky.social @prsfoundation.bsky.social @ppluk.bsky.social
Blasio Kavuma: learn about our featured composer ahead of our performance of "Soundclash"Being a composer, it's a fairly self-absorbed activity - so naturally, I want to start with my own experiences, and my own associations. But I don't have those in a vacuum... It's definitely something I want to start exploring again in future work and be really blatant about it: "this is a reference from xyz, but listen to what I've done to it". It's not just this new piece, it's the old one as well at the same time - what's that like?

It's one thing I've tried to move away from - that musical ideas exist in this pure, metaphysical realm. I don't think they do. We experience things musically for a host of reasons, and one of those reasons is the cultural associations we have with them. It's a nice way of engaging with that. One of the problems is [that] there's a slight lack of self-awareness about some of the assumptions that we have as composers, about how we're operating. This idea that the composer makes the musical decisions, and frames the musical remit - and there's this divide between the composer, the conductor, the performer [s], the audience, at every step.

Then the issue is: how much can you change that before it stops being classical? It makes talk of barriers a little bit problematic: if you really want to break down barriers, how far are we willing to go with that? Do we really want to sit, and look at ourselves, and how we think, and understand that? Because then you're breaking down barriers, as far as I'm concerned.

Kian Ravei's "Ipod variations" reflects on the collision of musical inspirations that appears on an ipod. It will be performed at PRX.LIVE on Fri 25th Sept. prxludes.net/2023/07/03/k... wegottickets.com/f/23959 @artscouncilengland.bsky.social @prsfoundation.bsky.social @ppluk.bsky.social
Learn about our featured composer ahead of our performance of iPod variations...To me, channeling inspiration is synonymous with channeling tradition. I don't know if you've read Philip Glass' autobiography - it's one of my favourite reads. He tells this story about the time he asked Ravi Skankar, "Where does music come from?" And Ravi Shankar responded:
"By the grace of my guru, the music has come through him to me.
So, music doesn't come out of thin air. It comes from generations of musicians who have laid the path before you... During the pandemic, I spent a year playing Bach's 371 chorales, and writing my own chorales in response. And now, there's a sense in which whenever I compose, Bach is sitting on my shoulder and guiding my voice-leading and harmony. I think that's one kind of inspiration.Often, what inspires me to compose a piece is to try to incite the same kind of feeling in a listener that another piece incited in me. I don't mean a whole piece, necessarily - it could just be a moment that stood out to me. So my music ends up being a mosaic of my favourite musical moments that I've assimilated into my personal language.

When I feel like I'm lacking inspiration, my solution tends to be to revisit something in the tradition that I love, take it to the piano, play it, and say to myself "oh, I didn't notice that detail! That's really extraordinary." It not only gives me musical ideas, but it helps me connect with my greater sense of purpose - which is that I can contribute something to this intergenerational love letter to humanity that we call music.Friday 25th Sptember at The Nest Oxford. "Snow Sprites" is a commission from composer Millicent B James which will be performed at PRX : LIVE at The Nest on Fri 25th Sept. prxludes.net/2026/01/19/5... Tix: wegottickets.com/f/23959 @prxludes.bsky.social @artscouncilengland.bsky.social @prsfoundation.bsky.social @ppluk.bsky.social
Learn about our commissioned composer ahead of her commissioned work, Snow Sprites...I am now more patient with myself when it comes to starting pieces. When I was younger, the ideas used to flow so easily - I used to write pieces in a few days - but now I will be sat at the computer for three hours and I wouldn't have written more than a few bars of material.

I guess I am more of an "adult" now, and responsibilities have shifted a little. I guess that we have to spend a bit more time sitting at the computer, or sitting at the piano, and figuring things out. Even if I am just playing a chord, what happens if we just move one of those notes down a semitone or if we go somewhere else? When I am overwhelmed, I will go outside, and I will stand outside and I will look up at the sky - even if there is nothing there on an overcast day (as it has been so often recently). Sometimes, there's a really beautiful break in the clouds; or it's completely clear and in the distance, you see a little plane that's just going across the sky.

Those kinds of things make me less overwhelmed and more grounded again; which means that I will then be able to go back to rework and figure out things in the composition I'm working on.

Goblin Band“The way we’re doing it is ... to imagine what is possible, a culture of our own that isn’t dictated by commercialism and capitalism, that you can bring that into the present again.”

Goblin Band are bringing traditional music into the present. Here's what people are saying. 3rd July gig: Goblin Band & Angeline Morrison: wegottickets.com/f/20843 @angelcakepie2.bsky.social @artscouncilengland.bsky.social @prsfoundation.bsky.social @ppluk.bsky.social #ocm #FundedbyPRSF
Black and white image of the Goblin Band outside in front of stonesThey can play and they can sing and they’re fearless… When I saw Goblin Band singing recently, I just thought, “Why didn’t I think of that?… They move stuff around… They go back to versions that we were too snotty to touch and they turn them into stomps.

- Martin CarthyEven the more pastoral aspects of Goblin Band’s debut EP – a meditative medley of ‘Birds In The Spring’ and ‘May Morning Dew’ for instance – have a power that goes beyond just the prettiness of Goblin Band’s arrangement.

- The Quietus
There’s the sense that this is a real gang; the camaraderie is palpable. They bounce off each other, often finishing each other’s sentences, and their passion for traditional English folk music is infectious.
