The visualization tool for wave heights is just in time for my classes on waves starting in November! odl.bzh/CACKkfxO. thanks to @oceandatalab.bsky.social fingers of higer waves are caused by refraction of swell over currents. The first time we saw this kind of feature was on Envisat ASAR.
7-day composite of wave heights from Scotland to France (dark red is 8 m) from SWOT KaRIN instrument (22 to 28 August 2025), showing land shadows and effects of currents on wave heights. In particular "fingers" of higher waves are pointing in the wave propagation direction and are caused by a focusing of waves in currents located "upwave" of the measurement.

The cyclone season has begun with Erin, now a tropical storm. TS Erin generated high swells along the U.S. coast and will bring big waves to European water. Have a look at the storm using 12um IR channel of @esa.int #Copernicus Sentinel3 SLSTR sensor on the #OVL portal seashot.odl.bzh/s/5WG1csM443A

🌊 @oceandatalab.bsky.social added more data to their "SWOT explorer": July 2024 at 250 m resolution is in. And this is the last day, August 1, with some very nice swell scattering between Java and Bali. Does this underwater shoal has a name? odl.bzh/8z6noOP_ storm ADC-1969 youtu.be/VeSV2cuiABk?...
High-pass filtered sea surface height measured by SWOT revealing a ring of scattered waves by a submarine shoal as ~ 1 km long swell arrives from storm ADC-1969Shaded relief map of the straits between Java and Bali showing the presence of a few shoals. One of these is shallow enough to scatter 1 km long swells.

I was looking at SWOT ocean data using @oceandatalab.bsky.social great OVL tool ... when I noticed some funny pixels on land... and zooming it happens to be clear cutting patterns in the Oregon forests. I'm curious to know more about forestry management in that area! odl.bzh/KgT-vr3a
Checkerboard pattern with 1 mile by 1 mile squares of cleared forests appearing with lighter earth tones in and green squares with older forest. Context image showing most of Oregon. The checkerboard patter is prominent south of Eugene, OR.

I was looking again at these fantastic Sentinel 2 images over sea ice. I know nothing about ice rheology but the patterns of the fractures in the ice are fascinating. I can't help thinking there is an ocean eddy in the middle of this image, dragging the ice around. odl.bzh/723iJTqJ
Image of sea ice in the Southern Ocean taken by Sentinel 2 on Dec. 3 2024. the patterns of ice fractures in the center of the image seems to wrap around 66.62°S , 169.80°E , as if dragged by an ocean eddy.
