To our regret, #Switzerland has today withdrawn its resolution on Small Cetacean Directed Takes Linked to Commercial Fisheries at #IWC70. In our view, the withdrawal came too early. We believe the resolution would have found broad support among other Member States. 1/2

On Monday, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) opens its 70th meeting in Hobart. This year marks two major anniversaries: the IWC was founded 80 years ago and 40 years ago the global ban on commercial whaling came into force, which saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of whales. 1/2

EU Member States were due to submit their draft 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 to the @ec.europa.eu, the first real test of the Nature Restoration Regulation. For the ocean, the priority must be passive restoration: letting degraded ecosystems recover naturally by removing human pressures. 🌊 1/3

Antigua and Barbuda has never been engaged in commercial whaling itself. Yet at at least 2 #IWC Meetings, it has made proposals to lift the moratorium that has protected whales from commercial whaling since 1986. The State is known for supporting commercial whaling interests, especially Japan’s. 1/3
