My date is showing me her fancy car simulator setup, and I wish I had more time before leaving because Iʼd ABSOLUTELY make her play Darius (1987) with the original aspect ratio

Oh my god. I just discovered this by sheer chance, and thought “haha, this sounds like the soundtrack to ‘Ano subarashī, o mō ichido’”. Turns out…

Itʼs a ton of cinematic, menu-heavy baseball, and not very nekketsu 💔

“Nekketsu Kōshinkyoku: Soreyuke Daiundōkai” (AKA “Super Awesome Field Day”). Itʼs *so* much fun.

This is “Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball-Bu: Soccer-Hen”! Itʼs part of the Kunio-kun series – the first was the original beat-ʼem-up, and then they quickly veered off into sports games… but, like, VERY GOOD AND SILLY AND RULE-BREAKY sports games. (Also, River City Ransom is my fave beat-ʼem-up of all time.)

What happened here: The guys agree to play football because the managerʼll “give them a ♥♥♥♥” – the joke being, it turns out to be a kiss. The translator translated *knowing* the punchline, and accidentally chose an English phrasing that, er, REALLY IMPLIES A SPECIFIC WORD QUITE INTENSELY—

exsqueeze me, official translation of an NES game???

A screenshot from “Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball-Bu: Soccer-Hen”. A character speaks: “Misako: You tied?! Don’t you want to ♥♥♥♥ me?!”

Told a Japanese friend Iʼve gotten into playing baseball, and she said “oh, as a manager?” :ʼ) The perception in Japan is so solidly “boys play baseball, and then a cute girl does the admin.” Please… 😭

That’s not true, is it? I haven’t had the pleasure of tinkering with a PC-98 in person, but I’ve read enough magazines from the time to know that they always presented their camera-taken screenshots in 16:10 widescreen.

A page from the June 1990 issue of “Oh! PC”, a Japanese computer magazine. It contains a breakdown of Enix’s dinosaurous JRPG “46-Okunen Monogatari”.

RIGHT!? As a huge fan of Jake Hunter and J. B. Harold Murder Club and various lesser-known Japanese adventure games, I‘m dyin’ to play those. What a magical scene Japanese flip phones were – low budgets and skilled developers… We don’t see that outside of indie games today.

@qthewetsprocket.bsky.social Reading ”Liberating Earth”, and omagad I loved loved LOVED Red Rover Red Rover – YA-esque adventure/romance is a surprisingly natural fit for FP, and your worldbuilding technique is *immaculate*. Getting True Stories next so I can read more of your work! ☺️

I had such a good time with it! Especially Requiem for a Renaissance captured my imagination and was such a page-turner – big into the “single-author anthology” feeling. 🥰

@obversebooks.bsky.social @blairbidmead.bsky.social Y’ello – it looks like the ISBN of “Rose-Coloured Crosshairs” is malformed (at least in the e-book version)! A digit is missing. What’s its actual ISBN? Signed, one of those database freaks.
