Reminds me of this quote by noted archeologist Bruce Trigger. Though here he was talking about postmodernism's failure to check neoconservatism, I think the same can be said for it (and therefore liberal elite's) failure to check fascism and other naked grabs for power.

"Although many postmodern ideas were of Marxist origin, postmodernism flourished after the failure of the radical student upheavals in Europe and North America in 1968, at a time when "truth" was no longer seen as necessarily liberating. The extreme subjectivism and opposition to grand narratives of postmodernists made it impossible for them to gain much clear or useful insight into the origins, structure, and transformations of social systems at the very time when worldwide political and economic changes were affecting everyone's life, often for the worse. Such inability to understand and critique what is actually happening in the world may explain why postmodernism has flourished symbiotically as the cultural accompaniment of the emergence of a highly exploitative transnational economy that continues to be driven by self-assured and very unpostmodern neoconservative ideology."

MN became a state shortly after the revolutions of 1848. Many of the revolutionaries left the european empires and went to new lands for freedom. They ended up on the frontiers, which at the time included Minnesota. Fighting on the barricades for freedom and liberty is in our blood.
