This is heartening to see. The Market seems ready for reform, and removing the councillor voting role from the board is the right move. Even as a non-voting presence, a councillor can create real pressure on vendors and City staff to align with what that councillor wants.

This is major criminal law reform for Canada. I didn't hear six new laws in this lil video, but I did hear the gravity of the weight in the government's position. Criminal law is not reformed lightly in Canada, and this is a substantial shift in approach.

Moratorium aside, the more important thing that they passed is a motion to create an Interim Control By-law, which will establish the planning framework and evaluation criteria that will determine how data centres do (or don't) get built in #HamOnt.

Today Hamilton council voted 13-3 to explore residency requirements for homelessness services. Emergency shelter is not a local amenity for residents only. By definition, people in crisis don't get to choose where their crisis happens.

Marking April 2 for this one. After years of trying to designate a church that couldn’t realistically be saved, Hamilton now faces a different issue: the site can’t be used flexibly because of downtown parking restrictions. A good example of policy goals colliding in practice.
