Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 20/05/2026That would mean giving power to a tool that constantly invents mistruths and confidently lies about 50% of the time? Given the run of politicians that the UK has seen in power over the last decade and a half, I'm not convinced that this didn't happen some time ago. 110
Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 18/11/2025I am currently sitting on the sofa, reading a report on global open access, while my 11 week old puppy sleeps on my lap. This is nice. Of course she'll wake up and start biting me relentlessly in 20 mins... 120
Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 12/11/2025Just as an aside on this... Please do double check with the journal's homepage for information on their policies. The Open Policy Finder is (I believe) based on the old SHERPA-ROMEO data, which were of rather mixed quality. 010

Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 04/10/2025Storm Amy has left me stranded in Dublin. I called BA to find an alternative flight home and they offered me a flight back to London from Inverness if I could make it there. How in God's name do they expect me to get to Scotland. Have a flight from Dublin now that will get me home 24hrs late. 010
Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 05/08/2025I'd agree and find myself in a similar place, but I really dont see the problem that mass market AI is trying to solve. I can see the benefits of something like AlphaFold, but Grok? Currently, its main purpose seems to be for dunking on people on Twitter with whom you disagree. 110

Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 30/07/2025I know at least one publisher (a large corporate) that has tried to do this, so I think that some publishers at least recognize the issue here. 010

Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 09/07/2025I would also note that APC caps are likely to cause all journals below the cap to raise their APCs to the cap. Meanwhile, nature is absolutely not going to drop to the cap because the US is but one market. So overall, I anticipate this raising the cost of publishing should the US follow this path 100
Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 09/07/2025Worth noting that Dr Bhattacharaya is an editor on the Journal of the Academy of Public Health which charges an APC of $2000 (but may also may receive financial support from Real Clear Foundation who, I believe, funded its creation). 110
Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 09/07/2025Maybe worth noting that Dr Bhattacharaya is an editor on the Journal of the Academy of Public Health (I am not getting into the potential biases of that particular journal here...) which charges an APC of $2000 (but may also receive financial support from Real Clear Foundation). 000

Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 01/07/2025And I am not for a second saying that Grok is an LLM that is well trained because I dont know what the hell it was trained on. Which is *exactly* my problem with AI tech. 110
Chris Pym @oapym.bsky.social · 01/07/2025You can see some elements of this with Grok on Twitter (it pains me to say) where "Normies" are sometimes changing their position based on Grok prompts. 110
