It's hard to describe the practiced cowardice that's taken over Oakland's governance. I don't even know how you bring yourself to write this about a war with several child-murdering massacres. Our city is in big trouble, not exaggerating.

While Measure E is likely to lose, equation local media have been working w/-average June primary turnout-is flawed. Number of votes received now exceeds 100K, that's more than last April's mayoral turnout. That means Tues thru Friday dumps represent approx 1/2 of received votes

Update on Oakland's vote. About 38K votes were counted Tuesday night. Probably around 7K were same day votes, rest early votes received by mail. About 56K votes were received since Tuesday, per ALCO data, likely still more to come Monday. Turnout is already higher than 4/25.

Great to finally see an obituary for Wilson Riles Jr. It's unbelievable that no local dailies published one, and I have to wonder if that's the impact of being completely under the thrall of OPOA. It's horrifying if that's the case.

It's wild that Measure C is getting ignored in all the buzz on E, because its a gigantic tax break for big business disguised as one for all business. Small businesses would save a meaningless amount yearly, but the City would lose millions in tax a year.
000
oakland-observer.bsky.social @oakland-observer.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
My daily reminder about how cops are made: OPD has a process to weed out psychos, then hires go thru a 6 month academy. During that time 5 to 8 cops age out or quit per month. A nation-wide recruiting crisis is producing small academies. That equals 0 to negative OPD growth
020
oakland-observer.bsky.social @oakland-observer.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Remains bizarre to me that there's no analysis why the City would increase budgeted OPD staffing when it clearly has no capacity to run that many officers successfully through six month academies. That only increases the monetary budget, not officers. www.sfchronicle.com/...

oakland-observer.bsky.social @oakland-observer.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Apparently, OPD's ill-fated social media account to report crimes, which was shut down in a day, never got okay from the City Administration. It was OPD's idea alone and they moved ahead with it without asking for approval.

Folks, I know the budget can be confusing. Here's the basics. Rather than vote for each year's budget by itself, Council votes for a 2-year package, w/assumptions on the second. The Mayor comes back w/ a new budget in the second year regardless, then Council also modifies that.
