Got to a massive twist in @natashapulley.bsky.social ‘s The Salt King. This is the third of her books I’ve read and she’s SO good at delivering world-building twists in a way that doesn’t… feel like cheating? It’s like an “ourobouros”-plot, with great, circular reasons for why things are happening

Had a terrible nightmare following a middle of the night editing session. I was looking at a page in one of my books in Scrivener… and a scene was written in the wrong POV and I’d left a note for myself: “Bungled this part, need to fix and re-upload” 😱 (opened the book in the morning, it was fine)

I generally prefer simpler prose, but it can depend. Frankly, I feel it should depend on the moment, as different scenes/moments can benefit from more or less “flourish”

I enjoy the work. As much as it’d be nice to get to spend more time with it (come on, agents and publishers, throw us a bone!), it’s nice to remember from time to time how rewarding the work is. Writing is nice.

So I was 20000 words into a draft, smooth sailing but something felt… off. Realized something crucial was missing and I have to rewrite… and that felt great? Because now I see the shape of the story and can make it better. That was a nice feeling. #Booksky 📚💙 #writersky #writingcommunity #amwriting

Reading The Salt King by Natasha Pulley, and, though it largely features Catholic stuff, as a former religious person, it HITS. I feel like it needs to be required reading for former religious people. REQUIRED… wait, shit, no…

Also, not for nothing, one of the “bad” behaviors the kid does is put lipstick on himself, which I initially took as a sign that the book would have a REALLY positive message at the end. Nope, it was just played for laughs, the book wants you to laugh at a kid for wanting to try lipstick 🙄

No joke, this early-reader book in which a cis-coded male character directs violence at people for no reason ends with him violating a woman’s body. It’s fine for a book to “just be funny,” but EVERY story sends a message, especially to kids.

The lady gets fed up and chastises him, causing the kid to break down crying. Lady feels bad, gives him a cookie. Kid is grateful, and makes to give old lady a kiss as a ‘thank you.’ Lady thinks “oh he’s changed,” comes in to receive the kiss…and the kid tricks the dog into licking her face. The end

Just read the literal worst children’s book I’ve ever encountered. In it, a child-coded, cis-male coded main character terrorizes an old lady and her dog: steals her purse, then spends the rest of the book drawing all over everything with her lipstick.

Tricky to say. I thought it worked in a world-building and character sense, though I haven’t read Sea of Silence yet, so I don’t know how it transitions into the next book. My gut says that if you’re gonna cut anything, it should just be to tighten up the dialogue, rather than gutting it altogether

Currently listening to D20 in the background. I’m, like, a year behind, watching Skyward Ho, and got to the part in episode 18 where Ally makes a bad Heroes reference (“save the girl” instead of “save the cheerleader”), and got hit by a wave of 😭😭. R.I. Freaking P. (Again, I’m a YEAR behind on D20)

As a sidenote, I’m considering doing a physical print of that (to start) to try to get the book in people’s hands IRL. I’ve looked into a couple of options, like Ingram Spark, but I’m curious about what’s worked for other indie authors.

The purpose of feminism is not to "fix men". Will feminism help men? Fuck knows, hopefully. But patriarchal politics seek to reduce women to dependents, to hoard politics and economic power in the hands of men and reduce women to property. The purpose of feminism is to free us from that condition.

Loved that part of UCD. Weaponry limitations are also a really fun way to worldbuild. In Unlinked Prince, the primary setting is a place that has developed highly advanced melee weapons, armor, and ways of covering vast distances. But when the protagonist encounters guns, the dynamics get wild

Having fun messing with the format of Unlinked Prince (links below) for the sequel. This is going to end up much cozier than the first. Still a lot of breakneck action, though. Just with a nice cup of tea. o-a-bhatti.itch.io/the-unlinked... books2read.com/u/49w2lp Free excerpt: oabhatti.com/82-2/

(5) As with any system of control, it pits people against the vulnerable “other.” (And in the process, these people say stupid shit that, show them to be people with a low “opinion” on the concept of human rights)

4) But because they subscribe to the patriarchy, they hyperfocus on trans women’s bodies, painfully unaware of how pointless such a focus is given the facts of their own situations. Inthey invent boogeywomen, spectres who haunt women’s locker rooms, who are there to steal women’s success

(3) Now to women’s sports, Sofia Cunningham benefits from “biological advantages” over her fellow cis would-be women’s basketball players. Furthermore even if I, a cis male, had trained my whole life like she has, despite her being near my height, she would STILL be better than me.

O. A. Bhatti, Author @oabhatti.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
(3) Using men’s sports as an example, if I as a young man had decided to pursue football as a linebacker, I wouldn’t have gotten to the level of, say, Brian Urlacher (someone who’s come to Cunningham’s defense), because he’s 6’4” and can cultivate more muscle mass to do that job better than me

(2) These are people who typically have “biological” (to use their words) advantages over others who might be interested in pursuing a career playing the same sport. Advantageous bone structure, greater lung capacity, more muscle tone, these things elevate people who would otherwise just be “good.”

Fantastic article that articulates how the right-wing grift machine works to make trans women’s existence into an “issue.” I also think there’s something to be said about how many of the champions of this grift are professional athletes. (1)
