In January, I returned to Syria for the first time in over a decade. When I left in 2013, I was a young man fleeing conscription and civil war. What I encountered now was a country that had changed in many ways, and not only on the surface. with @republik.ch

To visit Syria, I had to take a flight through Istanbul, then Beirut, followed by a car ride to Damascus. A typical Lebanese bureaucratic glitch forced me into an unplanned three-night stay in Beirut. It is the first time in 11 years. Why, is a story for another day.
