@engineerlondon.bsky.social - saw this and thought of you... Since I first saw your feed I have become an engineer in corporate and now know exactly what you, and this book, mean 🤣

...Deploy new tech, and integrate it into an existing grid which was designed for a totally different type of generation. Grid engineers are brilliant but as he also mentioned there are never enough of them. And privatisation/siloisation exacerbates talent issues.

A similar problem happened in the UK in 2019 as Electric Brit mentioned. IMO the problem isn't renewables but the huge number of new, smaller generators operated by a greater number of companies, who all have to have an excellent staff of 100% accurate commissioning engineers who are able to...

I stand corrected on this particular issue! I agree that compiled evidence against a claim which is instinctively incorrect to subject matter experts, can be very useful. We assemble similar evidence bodies in the water industry which are roundly ignored. Nice to see this done.

Sometimes when an emergency is ongoing, those who are normally in the know, are the only ones who know how much they don't know, and keep silent. Bloody hell, that was some Pratchett-level word-confusion

The comms side of it always boggles my mind. Presumably after comms are lost due to the scale of the blackout, various engineers and line(persons?) go to assigned stations. But I know you can't say too much! It's just hard to imagine emergency response with no phones or internet.

It's the Western way. Whenever a concern is raised, carry out a review. Never actually do any work or make any changes. The more dangerous or urgent the problem, the more reviews the panjandrums carry out!

The impact of AI and absolute harnessing of the internet by malign powers both national and criminal is getting very intimidating. More than ever people are directly unquestioningly plugged into social media, where untruth is truth.

Just came back to the app to check on things around #heathrow and the grid side of it. Amazed to see only a few posts down in the search for "heathrow grid" the dis and misinformation starts - Euro Maidan, random posters in various languages saying things that are totally untrue or unestablished atm

Other types may be most efficient, but quad bundles look the 'meatiest' and coolest. By a long shot.

I do think it is inevitable. Most technologies through history have been twisted for use in warfare or espionage as well as unethical ways of making money. The internet was never going to be immune.

There's only one untouchable group, as usual, and that's the over-65s. Why? Why why why? Britain in 2030: you will have a miserable life where nothing works right, then go into care which is marginally better and costs everyone else 6 figs, then you die. Lovely.

Watching Points West report about the coming Council cuts. Everything that is nice for young people - libraries, museums, school road safety patrols - on the chopping block. Meanwhile the health and social care budget still rises and rises. It's plainly unsustainable and the government must cut it.

That's encouraging to hear. I suppose the logic within the microprocessor isn't really that different, in design terms, to relay logic.

Lars @o1ars.bsky.social · 14/01/2025
It's possible we've actually lost the ability to design resilient control systems which don't operate using microprocessors. That's a little bit terrifying.

Not even kidding, all the government needs to do is hire some low support autistics, train them/immerse them in their briefs and then give them executive power and tell them to improve efficiency. Oh the things we could do!

I worry that putting these things under a politically charged umbrella and naming it all 'DEI' with highly paid directors specifically working on 'DEI' has just made it easier for politically motivated scrapping of modern professional behaviour in the workplace and rolling back to darker times.

Lars @o1ars.bsky.social · 11/01/2025
A certain body of people has made a big, big fuss of patting themselves on the back for ethical management as if it's some kind of privilege or higher level behaviour showing how intelligent and kind they are. It's not. It's just common sense and the only way to run a business.

Lars @o1ars.bsky.social · 11/01/2025
The other side to this is behaviour within an organisation. Accommodating special requirements, religious holidays other than Christian-normative ones (xmas and easter) and ensuring discrimination is not present within the workplace. For the most part that is just modern professionalism.

Lars @o1ars.bsky.social · 11/01/2025
Am I a silly goose or is "DEI" incredibly complicated and politically charged for no apparent reason? I'll be a manager one day and I will hire the best candidate every time. It's that simple. Who will fit my team and the role they will perform? Nothing else matters to me or my stakeholders.

Fair play to these men - they were simply incredible at their craft. Even if they didn't always get home safe to their families it's an impressive feat.

One would hope when it does eventually happen in other countries, smart metering is not done the British way. Needs to be govt run from the start and carried out by the powerline company/linemen with full authority, district by district, not dotting meters around as customers consent or are coerced.

We have several including myself at my company, and are being sent on more and more courses to become developers-lite. The software we've built so far has been game changing but never existed before as IT professionals don't and won't understand our requirements or particulars.

Lars @o1ars.bsky.social · 03/01/2025
That's a point that professional institutions have highlighted in the UK with regards to writing software for engineering. The Engineering Council believes we should have civil, electrical etc engineers who can code and develop, rather than outsourcing to tech firms who don't know the subject matter

Just saw a photo of #Fauci and realised... He's a poor sod who is a good example of what happens if you put your head above the parapet to do the right thing. You can get crucified for it.

Tw pet loss. Lost a cat today suddenly. She was a relatively young senior. She was so lovely and so loved. There was just no warning - no emotional preparation. Sometimes having pets and the way they go, is like the sudden death of a human. It's a challenge of owning cats. 🥺😿

Marvin Rees offered a peerage. Losing faith in Starmer really, really fast. Does he realise that Rees and his sense of superiority are the reason Labour lost Bristol? Cronyism, rewarding failure, these are becoming more Labour traits than Tory. The future feels bleak.

Yay 8p... Thanks for something @octopus.energy but I hope you agree this isn't very sustainable! I literally left the house for that hour! Fair play, we saved over 54% as a region so people are still doing the right thing, but rewards are not worth it.

@garethdennis.bsky.social have you seen this? It seems more and more parts of the transport industry in the UK or UK adjacent are normalising retaliation against whistleblowers and covering up serious safety issues. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I'm a bit of a centrist so some people I wish to engage with are on The Other Place however not THOSE people. I know, glutton for punishment. Muted the post at least as they will inevitably pile on me otherwise! I also like to challenge viewpoints but pile ons and insults are not OK.

Post on the Other Place got retweeted by a Reformer with a smarmy and frankly awful comment about Angela Rayner's accent, and I got called delusional and various other names. Lovely people, I hope their favourite men get to run the country one day. 😒

DAs are HARD WORK especially if the employer uses a cheaper uni which has more, shall we say, challenging teaching like my alma mater. The resulting graduates must be hugely employable as they've proven ruggedness and resilience. That said, degree apprentices should be watched for mental health.

The whole "all the builders by my house are Slavs" (more likely "polish" tbf) shtick is part of the insanity that brought us Brexit. "they are taking arrrr jobs" well nobody from the UK has gone to do their job instead and now we're in a mess. As predicted. Nice job Brexit

There's this mental idea in the UK and US that 'the market will fix everything' including skills supply. It never has, and it never will, in a prompt enough fashion to meet govt priorities. You'd need a 15-20 year delay to get 'markets' to produce the right skills. Needs direct action.

I'm the same, in a weird way, with my job. I think my fascination for engineering started with Auntie Mabel of Come Outside exploring a Severn Trent sewage works. Now my work revolves around them and I wander around them often. They smell considerably worse than your dream places do...

I feel like that's what DAR is designed to prevent. I live in a city powered directly off the steel stuff at 132kV and we had no blips in power at all, but wooden overheads have less clearance between conductors and many tree hazards which basic auto reclosers don't/can't clear.

Hopefully this will have considerably more range than the currently prominent ZigBee, which can't really do walls or any kind of distance even in a small terraced house.

People with neurodivergences enrich businesses and bring new perspectives etc, but schooling doesn't prepare us for work because we don't fit the one size they offer. This sort of thing is exactly how we get more of our people into work - embrace the special interests and immerse us in them early.
