Let’s be clear. AI is not an intelligence; it’s not being trained, it doesn’t think, it doesn’t have agency, it's not gone rogue and it’s not alive. Humanising it helps Big Tech bypass laws they’ve already broken and weaken laws they’re keen to flout. Read on: thepoint.com.au/opinions/261...

We’re hearing a great many troubling claims at this week’s public hearings of the parliamentary inquiry into AI, and no doubt there are plenty more to come. As we follow the proceedings, it’s vital th...

"Smart glasses – including the best-known Ray Ban Meta glasses – can be fitted with prescription lenses. Alternatively, someone might simply require smart glasses to support their vision." Do better @theconversation.com! "Require"? These aren't TGA approved devices.

Can Australian businesses legally ban customers from using smart glasses?
An outright ban is legally risky. Here are some safer options.

It's ingenious if nothing else. They keep coming up with ways for the lower/middle class to funnel money up to the rich! Look out for the new "Early Trading Alerts Fee" being passed on to you on the next statement from your broker/superfund.

What is more despicable? Making money of this or making money off residential property? Neither require an overly high IQ (a lack of morals perhaps), but people who do either often like to think up there with the folk working on a cure for cancer.

Do you have the data and code to share? The column plot not showing any more than three categories for any given year is intriguing? Both might be "showing stacked counts" but they're not showing "the same data".

If I was given the first stacked figure and the figure shown during "Making the lines semi-transparent helps to see where there are more countries with the same value.", I'm not sure I would process these as representing the same data. I am intrigued by the possibilities here though! Good stuff.

I think you're missing the point that if we reserve some for a while, then there will be enough for the gas companies of the future to take it for free. Think ahead Greg.

Am preparing a talk for medical researchers about the use of ai in statistics (in health research). In the context of assisting with their research as opposed to building an ai tool as part of a project. What are some 'must touch on' topics or stories?

Name a company with 4 developers getting 125k each, that is going to release 3 of them, and give the remaining one a 250k anthropic subscription to thus save 125k PA. I understand the pitch, I want to see the use case and real world implementation.
010
Matt Cooper @nzcoops.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
Right! That's exactly my point. Name a company that is giving all their developers on 70k PA access to 250k PA worth of tokens. Name a company that last year hired two consultant developers at 300k each that is now paying 550k each, so they can have 250k tokens. The proposition is unrealistic.

Matt Cooper @nzcoops.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
I think we're probably on the same page - with this being nonsense and destructive! As for the math, the avg American doesn't earn anywhere near 250k, and most that do wouldn't have a 250k expense account. The carbon footprint for those that do is probably already in the hundreds!
230
Matt Cooper @nzcoops.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
It's probably already well over 2.7 times the global average.

Matt Cooper @nzcoops.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
2.7 times the global average carbon footprint. Global average. I wonder what multiplier it is for the sort of person in a company in a role whereby they have access to $250k 'expenses' for that ai subscription? I imagine that sort of person's footprint is already MUCH higher than global avg.

The "Percent of individuals recording a rental profit or loss" is the percentage of... "all tax paying adults"? I expected it to sum to 100% - as everyone with one makes a profit or loss, and the previous figures had "# investment prop owners" as the denominator.

You often hear from gas companies that "yeah but we pay state royalties!!!" Lol nope. WA drivers pay more in rego and licence fees than gas companies pay WA in royalties. Heck WA gamblers pay more tax. And that's incredible given WA does NOT have pokies in pubs and clubs
Chart showing: WA drivers and gamblers pay more tax than gas companies pay royalties: 2025-26

Rego: $1,520m
Vehicle licence duty: $678m
Gambling taxes: $403m
Oil and gas royalties: $385m

You'll often hear how the gas industry is vital for Australia because it's so big. But really the only thing big about it is its profits.
Chart showing Profit and wages of oil and gas, compared to administration and support

Admin and support: Wages $64.3bn; Profits $13.1bn
Oil and gas: Wages $4bn; Profits $71.6bn

More on LLMs and plot interpretation: they do fine in normal conditions, but struggle when the plot conflicts strongly with their priors. @simonpcouch.com and I investigated why and what might help: posit.co/blog/llm-plo...
Line chart showing percent correct on the y-axis and three conditions on the x-axis: Baseline, Intuitive, and Mocked. Three lines represent GPT-5.2, Claude Opus 4.5, and Gemini 2.5 Pro. All three models score between 93-98% on baseline, then drop on intuitive and mocked conditions. All three perform the worst on the mocked condition.
