Annie Leibovitz, Susan Sontag in Sarajevo, 1993
To defend the concept of civilisation – that would no doubt have spoken to Sontag. There’s a photograph of her taken by her partner, the celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, who had accompanied her to Sarajevo. It shows Sontag amid the rubble of Vijećnica, the City Hall and National Library, which was bombed in August 1992. She crouches on a rock, shoulders forward, one wrist grasped in her other hand, a guarded posture. Her face is framed by her black hair, with its trademark flash of white. An oversized shirt is thrown on over a polo neck – clothing for getting work done.

Shot+should've posted yesterday .... I'd heard that on a single night of the year, all the ginkgo trees in NYC drop their leaves. That was Sunday night After years of doubt, can confirm this is truth! I didn’t walk the whole neighborhood, but i checked a couple streets, and they’re all down. Woo
ginkgo tree leaves piled up on the side of the road
