Upper West Side, Manhattan: the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan will screen Moonrise Kingdom on the big screen Aug 25 at 7 pm. The host, film producer & studio exec Ira Deutchman, invited me to attend & talk about it, which we'll do afterward. Ticket info is here: operations.daxko.com/online/5384/...

Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as Sam and Suzy, the young adolescent lovebirds who run away from their families in Moonrise Kingdom. Suzy is in the foreground in a red beret and holding a transistor radio. Sam is behind her in his trademark coonskin cap. In the background is a body of water, and in the deep background a bit of shoreline with visible trees and a sunset sky. They are in a boat, but the frame is cut off in a way that makes that hard to understand. Both are wearing life jackets and have determined expressions.

I've always been and still remain, a strong believer in the power of movies to bring people together. Leave it to Spielberg to create the vehicle to prove the point, both thematically and viscerally. See Disclosure Day in a movie theater with other people and you won't regret it.

Glad to see the Academy making more international films eligible, but this is a drop in the bucket. I wonder aloud if these rules will affect juries at these festivals given the stakes. Why would they give the top award to a film that doesn't have the high stakes? Just asking.

This may come as a surprise, but I encourage everyone to go see the Naked Gun film opening this week. We need to encourage the studios to widen out the types of films they've been making. Comedies should be seen with a crowd. When was the last time you had that experience?
