That doesn’t mean I don’t have my own headcanons about her. I have plenty! It’s just flat out wrong to claim that you can’t build a picture of Indis from the text simply because she doesn’t get much space

I’ve spent months digging into the vanyar and u don’t get much direct information there, much of what we’re told about the vanyar is framed in relation to the Noldor, so you have to dig through linguistic arguments to piece things together. Just to get some idea of who *Indis* is

of course the main question should be which issues voters consider open to debate, nuance, and ultimately negotiation. and the thing of course is that we stand for [insert oppressed group] but not too much. there we can concede

it's not even that complex I mean if you asked for meat you should get meat and you should be fucking angry if you get fish instead

anyway the principle that representatives should be held accountable for the promises they made to earn their seats is apparently a little too much shows that even liberal democracy is a little too much for liberals

I've been giving this point in my academic life far too much useless weight and expecting it to be a defining moment for what kind of lawyer and person I'll be. and...it is not. really. really.

okay silly like all my deadly anxiety is but one of many things, & I need to stick into my head that worst case scenario thesis is bad and that won't make me a bad future lawyer. skills are different.

gotta be honest I feel such immense gratitude towards the few men speaking up from a place of genuine compassion and knowledge without asking for prostration in return, and then I'm suddenly hit with a great deal of shame. Understandable, yes. But shameful all the same.

men will be allowed to complain about misandry all they want when a systemic culture designed to endorse and condone the rape of men is a thing

thing is if your town is small enough you know everyone there and you know most of these people are broke just like you, and then you see them advocating for the private property of idk a megafuckton of a castle. Pal. Pal. I know you. what are you doing

I mean violence yeah, and also the desire to replace one's rule with their own without any substantial change (at least not a positive one). Not liberators. To me. I agree their rebellions raise some questions but that doesn’t change the fact. Imho.

I’m invested in the fall narrative, it’s the whole thing. It’s just that idk we tend to glaze over what exactly these characters are falling from so it’s absolute good vs evil all over again, bc of course the noldor must have been absolutely good to fall

I can’t explain how frustrating debates over characters’ moral positionalities are to me. I don’t think media analysis’s ultimate goal is to place characters in a black or white box. I don’t care about boxes. I don’t care whether Feanor, a fictional tool and nonexistent man, is morally good or bad.

the irony of don’t be an asshole to your family members otherwise we'll fight and we won't get to stay together with the family members who treat you like shit. The irony

ok listen "you can always speak up" doesnt work with family where it's pretty much understood that peace must be maintained at all costs, and your family doesn't really want to hurt you, they’re family! they’re blood, they love you, why can't you be happy, why can't you just fucking shut up

it’s easy to say that women and queer authors and authors of color are held to higher standards because of mere animosity towards them but i think a major mechanism of that is this diarist image of them where their work is about themselves and its contents are loved or hated in that light

i had a professor in undergrad who said that male authors are understood to be capable of abstraction from themselves whereas all women are diarists whose work directly reflects them, even to their admirers, and i think a lot about how that effect propels heightened scrutiny on certain authors

the thing is sometimes the point is not romance sometimes the point is that we dispose freely of anyone we deem to be sullying the path to the throne we will sit upon thinking all the while how right we really are. Or something like that.

silmarillion fans handshake the rabbis of old and at the middle it says “who tf was this character’s wife though? we have to make up something about her”

nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
but younger generations of professors/assistants are so keen on drawing assumptions and moralising that it's genuinely disturbing and embarrassing tbh. Embarrassing because they're just so wrong about why students & humans "fail" in a way that truly shows teaching wasn't really for them

and what if she's a good mother but literally bad at everything else. what then?? It's just so weird that that might be the first line of defense, and I get why this happens but sanctity of motherhood can sometimes limit how fully a character can be understood
110
nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
exactlyyy and good motherhood/parenthood is such a feeble measure of character like, there's a difference in how it's perceived by the parent and the child and different irrational feelings each might have about it

this fandom is truly something because on one side you'll get full critical essays with notes and bibliography about the source material and thoughtful discussions of racism and misogyny and on the other people complaining about smartasses and *aren't you tired of being a hater*

and like I know this mostly comes from a good place but what I'm saying is are we able to think of other characteristics that may be good but don't rely on the dichotomy of good vs bad mother. Are we

nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
puzzling the importance and emphasis fandom places on good motherhood when it comes to female characters as though being a good mother was the only good quality a fc could have. But also what if she wasn't a good mother after all. Does that mean she's a bad friend/companion/artisan etc. person? uh

=this is just to say that the way exams are structured here makes resorting to ai tools highly unlikely, but students aren't treated any better than databases if that makes sense.
010
nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
The most satisfying exam I took was my last one and actually the only instance in which the exam was structured as a discussion and a genuine exchange of opinions between me and my professor.
110
nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
that's actually my biggest issue. these kinds of oral exams require students to memorize 1500+ pages of law textbooks without engaging with them critically, and evaluation is based on 3-4 questions on isolated topics.
110
nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
law students in my country are seldom required to take written exams so I dont see how ai can be a problem here. That said 2 critiques: 1) this leaves students unprepared to deal with academic writing or writing in general; 2) the way oral exams are structured is no guarantee of deep comprehension
110
nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
also can you people be for real please. You cannot assume people aren't being anti ai enough just because they don't post ''ai sucks'' every other day. Get. A. Grip.

anyway. really looking forward to reading this one
Book cover for "Classicism: How the West Invented the Ancient World"
by Marchella Ward and description: "We’ve been sold a story about the ancient world: Greece gave us democracy, Rome gave us law, and the West inherited the lot. It’s a neat, noble timeline. It is also a dangerous lie. In Classicism: How the West Invented the Ancient World, Marchella Ward reveals this specific version of history for what it really is: not a neutral record of facts, but the structural foundation for modern Islamophobia.

What links the genocides of the Palestinians in Gaza, the Uyghurs in East Turkestan, and Muslim populations in India? In a word, ‘classicism’—the dominant narrative of world history in which nations and peoples find their origins in a pre-Islamic time. Muslims are, in this narrative, a people without ancient history: scandalous outsiders who threaten the myth of the nation.

Urgent, accessible, and unapologetic, Classicism demands a counter-narrative to the standard Western script. Ward finds the building blocks for this new history in Islamism, long positioned as the enemy, but here offering vital provocations towards a better world not just for Muslims but for all those living on the underside of colonial modernity."

just saying that classics are no less contingent on their time/place and cultural milieu than contemporary works, and if people reading Dostoevsky took the time to understand Dostoevsky they would see it too. Just saying that many “classic readers” are especially incurious

nycteris @nycterisg.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
People are so weird about Dostoevsky. People are so weird about classics in general and about what universality means in particular.
