This year, all five species nested successfully, a miraculous feat for an urban beach. We applaud NYC Parks & Recreation or continuing to prioritize protections here for our fellow New Yorkers 🐦! When will the first piping plover arrive in 2027? 📷: Benjamin Forbes

Today we’re thinking about the first plover to arrive this year in New York City. This plover touched down in Edgemere, Queens on March 7th, 2026, undoubtedly knowing that a stretch of beach there is protected for plovers, terns, oystercatchers, & skimmers.

Your voice is needed! 📣 Contact your member of Congress and both U.S. Senators to speak up for species & against this rule change! Ask your friends and family to do the same! We will never give up the fight to defend imperiled species, and the Endangered Species Act itself!

The decision to rescind the regulatory definition of “harm” under the Endangered Species Act could enable extractive industries to destroy or modify the habitat of imperiled plants and animals — the places they need to feed, shelter, raise their young— even if it results in their death or injury.

Today, the Trump administration’s unprecedented move to strip imperiled species of protections for the places where they live went into effect. American wildlife including Florida manatees, grizzlies, salmon and piping plovers all face a new threat to their survival.

Heartthrob! This beautiful plover chick hatched July 2nd on the busiest Fort Tilden beach. Sadly, their two siblings didn’t survive but we have all the feels & hopes - for this little intrepid survivor.

His final summer with us, 2023, our volunteers and National Park Service staff helped protect his plover family, just as we did each summer he spent in NYC, staffing a temporary beach closure, and they fledged one chick.

It’s American Oystercatcher Day! Striking, boisterous, & fascinating, they make awesome ambassadors for our coastal ecosystems, we are grateful to see them along our city beaches. They are great parents too. Just like the plovers - & terns & skimmers - they need protection! #birds #birdoftheday

It’s World Migratory Bird Day, & as many mark the occasion by looking at birds, here’s to the birds as they look at us. Spending time w/ plovers, we see these intelligent sentient beings examining us, which helps us to understand & respect our place in their world and not just the other way around.

They are New Yorkers too! And, we must do everything we can to protect this intrepid endangered species. Here’s a few important tips: Please no dogs on New York City beaches - or any beaches where Piping Plovers & other beach-nesting birds nest; no kites or drones; & no e-bikes.

Sanderlings! This remarkable bird is a true long-distance athlete- some flying 6,000 miles each way on migration. Resilient, fierce & cold defiant, you may see them running in flocks at the water’s edge. And no, (again), they aren’t plovers! 😉

Our final ask. Thank you to everyone who has given, and for those who have not, it is not too late. This past year, we saw threats to plovers from our beaches to the halls of Congress. Our work has never been more urgent. If you are on the fence about giving, now is the time.
