Starbucks’ continued bad labor relations practices are grounds for a return to independent oversight. Comptroller Levine, on behalf of four NYC pension funds, NYS Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Trillium Asset Management have filed a shareholder proposal.

Text reads, "NYC Comptroller Mark Levine, on behalf of four NYC Pension Funds, New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Trillium Asset Management filed a shareholder proposal urging Starbucks to reestablish the Environmental, Partner, and Community Impact Committee, which would oversee labor relations policies and practices."Green background with Starbucks shop. Text shows a timeline of events and reads: The Saga Continues

2021 – Starbucks Employees Voted to Unionize

12,000+ employees and 700+ stores voted to unionize
600 open unfair labor practice charges
2023 – Starbucks Establishes its Environmental, Partner, and Community Impact Committee (EPCI Committee)

EPCI Committee was formed after Starbucks shareholders supported a proposal that would assess the company’s labor practices including collective bargaining rights.
2025 – In a reversal, the Starbucks’ Board dissolved the EPCI Committee.

NOW – This proposal asks Starbucks to re-establish the EPCI Committee to mitigate labor risks that could potentially impact operations and diminish shareholder value. Quote by Comptroller Mark Levine, "“Starbucks cannot continue to treat labor relations as an afterthought. Investors want accountability, not more rhetoric that makes broad claims that the company is back while ignoring the very real concerns of the status of their workforce engagement. Myriad labor challenges, including the status of an agreement on a first contract with unionized employees, remain unaddressed. This is no way to ensure the long-term success of the company.”

Part of the answer is increasing the amount of power we can generate in New York. More supply can help lower energy costs, and those savings can ultimately reach households. The technology exists. Now we need to keep bringing people together to turn these ideas into solutions for New Yorkers.

As well-placed AI fears set off calls for international and federal action, City government must work to protect New Yorkers, our local economy, and tech infrastructure from the most present AI disruptions here at home. Read the full article in our Substack: buff.ly/gRCR5g0
“Our government is built on a rickety tech foundation that includes dozens of mainframes from the 1980s. We largely missed the cloud revolution, the mobile revolution, and the big data revolution, and are now dragging our feet on the machine-learning revolution.”“We have work to do to ensure the benefits... are shared broadly... Steering to an equitable, healthy, deeply human future for the millions who call this place home will require nothing less than the reinvention of our institutions, including the government of New York City. It will require asking profound questions about what kind of city we want to be.”

If large numbers of New Yorkers lose their white-collar jobs because of automation, we have no pool of funds ready to provide them wage support or to offer large-scale retraining.”“NYPD will need to figure out how to balance the allure of powerful new AI tools against the imperative to preserve privacy. Our public schools will have to rethink homework in a world where students have access to AI at home or on their cell phones by fourth or fifth grade, if not earlier. Workforce agencies will have to figure out what jobs they are even training people for now. The Health Department will have to adapt disease surveillance for the AI era.”

💰️ 🌱 New York City is putting $5 billion behind clean energy investments. Comptroller Levine is proposing an investment of $5 billion into private markets, targeting cleaner, more reliable energy while seeking to generate strong returns for our pensioners.
Background of NYC skyline with solar panels in the foreground. Text reads, "Bloomberg. NYC Pensions Eye Private Markets in $5 Billion Green Allocation."Background shows a building. From Bloomberg article, text reads: New York City Comptroller Mark Levine unveiled a plan to steer billions of dollars into private markets, characterizing the move as a shift designed to help the investor meet its climate-related goals while safeguarding returns.

The Comptroller’s Office’s Bureau of Asset Management said the proposal targets three of the City’s public pension funds: New York City Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS) and Board of Education Retirement System (BERS), according to a statement on Wednesday. In all, the plan is to allocate $5 billion to private markets. Background shows an electric vehicle charging. From Bloomberg article: “There’s a pretty compelling case that the most important projects are now being funded in the private markets,” Levine said in an interview. There’s “also a strong case that this is a good investment on financial merits. And because of all that, this is the right move right now.”

Levine’s plan to steer green capital into private markets coincides with climate week in New York, where more than 100,000 people are expected to gather over the coming days in order to discuss investments, policies and civil society measures that can help address global warming. For many, the event also represents an opportunity to highlight the affordability and security benefits of clean energy solutions.

Background is a close up of solar panels.
From Bloomberg article: “Americans are facing high energy costs, while extreme weather is putting growing strain on infrastructure that wasn’t built for the climate challenges we face today,” Levine said in the statement.

“Our pension systems have an opportunity to put substantial capital to work in a growing sector,” he said. The goal is “seeking the strong returns our pensioners depend on while investing in cleaner, more reliable and resilient energy that can lower costs and reduce emissions at the same time.”

Quote by Comptroller Mark Levine that reads, “Programs like the HIT have a proven record of generating strong returns, jobs, and homes all at once. This investment is a major step toward expanding our City’s crucial housing stock and tackling the rising cost of living. At a time when many New Yorkers are struggling just to keep a roof over their heads, our strategic partnership with the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust allows our pension funds to make a sound investment while delivering desperately needed housing and good union jobs.”

🚨 Big News: $300 million to increase affordable housing so the people who build this city can afford to live here. Four NYC pension funds just made the largest-ever allocation to the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust (HIT), supporting workforce and affordable homes. For maps of HIT investments 👇️
Background shows skyline of New York City with a headline from a Gothamist article that reads, "NYC pension funds make $300M affordable housing investment to help solve apartment shortage."Excerpt from Gothamist article that reads, "The new investment in the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust marks the first allocation of its kind since Levine announced a plan to direct $4 billion in city pension funds over the next four years to build more apartments.

“This is a dramatic increase in the pace of investment because the crisis is worse than it's ever been,” Levine said. “There are projects all over the city where the zoning is ready, and they have a developer, but they're waiting and waiting and waiting for financing, and projects die because it can take years.”

Excerpt from Gothamist article that reads, "The trust has helped construct more than 44,000 homes in New York City over the past four decades, according to its website, and officials say they plan to finance 10,000 more in the coming years.

The apartments constructed with loans from the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust are typically priced for middle-income residents or feature a mix of income levels, with luxury apartments and some units priced for lower-income renters. The projects require union labor."
