Newly found ”Backwards-biting beast” pendant, from Lolland Kommune in Southern Denmark (first from DK as far as I know). Often just simply referred to as Jelling-styled, but it is a tad more complicated than that. The majority of these have been found in the east, in Rus’. 🥳🏺 #FindsFriday

A - very - special find! It entered the collections of the Historical Museum as no. 4906 - a brooch of "hitherto unknown type" - in 1873, after being found in a burial mound at Hurjom, Ångermanland. But a closer examination clearly show that it's rather the hinged top of a dress pin.🏺 #FindsFriday

In 1877, Hjalmar Stolpe test-pitted the area we now know as Birka's Garrison. He never understood its importance - but he documented his findings. Earlier this week I realised what a C-shaped feature on his drawings represented: This bronze bracelet. Thank you (yet again) Hjalmar! #FindsFriday

The Norse Borre style has its name from an ornamented bridle found in Borre, Norway. But it's by no means restricted to western Scandinavia - parts of such bridles have been found in graves from Norse-influenced areas of present day Russia. Like these, found in 1872 at Bezhetsk in Tver Oblast:
Borre-styled bridle fittings with interlaced animal ornaments (n:o 1,2,3, 5/7 and 6) from a burial mound excavated in 1872 "close to the cemetery of Bezhetsk" by Finnish scholar Daniel Europeus. Parts of a similar bridle have also been found in Gnezdovo by modern Smolensk.
