The basis for this decision is unfounded. It will harm not just trans women, but all women. Shrinking the boundaries of who is considered a woman puts every woman at risk. Protecting trans women is protecting all women. Our struggle, and our freedom, is shared.

This ruling enables the exclusion of trans women from 'single-sex' spaces, further eroding their already-precarious safety and access. Trans women, who face pervasive systemic violence and marginalisation, are being pushed further out of public life. But trans women belong — everywhere.

Sex and gender are constructs shaped and enforced by the system of cisheteropatriarchy. This system punishes those who live outside its boundaries. That punishment is often disguised as 'protection' — and trans women are bearing the brunt. In no uncertain terms, trans women are women.

In fact a representative survey by Amarach research reveals wide support for legislation, with 82% supporting Trans people being protected. We also welcome Senators voting 27-6 against a delaying amendment by Sen McDowell. Our communities have waited long enough already 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
