🧵Just ten years ago today Helen Joanne (Jo) Cox was murdered just down the road from me. She died after being shot and stabbed multiple times in the street in the town of Birstall, where she had been due to hold a constituency surgery. Words are a very powerful and potentially dangerous
The woman in this photograph is Jo Cox, the Labour MP for Batley and Spen from 2015 until her murder in 2016. Widely regarded as a rising star in British politics, she was a passionate advocate for human rights, refugees and campaigns to tackle loneliness and social isolation. Before entering Parliament, she built a distinguished career in the humanitarian sector, working on international aid and development projects around the world. Her life was tragically cut short on 16 June 2016 when she was murdered by a far-right extremist in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

reopening of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in 2001 revitalised the Broad Canal, making it a popular through-route once again. The canal also features structures like the Locomotive Lift Bridge (Turnbridge Lift Bridge), a scheduled ancient monument. #Canals #HuddersfieldBroadCanal
Turnbridge Mills in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Its most recognisable feature is the tall octagonal chimney, a Grade II listed structure built around 1872 for the Hirst Brothers’ cotton spinning mill. Crossing the Huddersfield Broad Canal is the historic Turnbridge Lift Bridge, constructed in 1865. Once at the heart of Huddersfield’s textile industry, parts of the mill complex have since been repurposed for apartments and university use, giving new life to these impressive Victorian buildings. Over the years I have had the privilege to work with many wonderfully creative people and one of these is photographer John Gill. His images of life in post-industrial towns and fading coastal resorts are not always easy viewing. They do however provide a fascinating historical record
The photograph is characteristic of John Gill’s style, which focuses on capturing "real life" and ordinary people candidly in public spaces like streets and cafes. Much of his work is centred in the North of England, notably documenting life in former industrial and coal-mining areas
