Unfortunately, very few people can afford to keep a home in DC and back in their home district, especially if they have kids in school. Legislators are required by law to maintain those two homes, which is hard even on $174k. It _looks_ like a lot, but it helps keep non-millionaires out of Congress.

Yes, there is little excuse for any of the other mayors who should have known about it. It seems they (most or all) were told, but neglected to look into it. Mamdani acknowledges this, too: “This was multiple mayoral administrations refusing to release documents that New Yorkers were owed.”

Globally, white men ARE the minority. People of European descent are roughly 15% of the population, and the men are about half of that. So white men are an extreme minority. And yet… nobody seems to be abusing us, despite our abuses of others. So if we STOP being jerks, we should be just fine.
