Originally released in 1981, the BBC Micro was developed by Acorn Computers as part of the BBC Computer Literacy Project. A popular object at the museum, it provides a hit of nostalgia for museum visitors that attended school in the 80s 📸James Ravilious, 1984. Beaford Archive

Cosmetically, the computer was in perfect condition. However, after a loud pop and a puff of smoke, it was clear that it was in need of repair. Thanks to the hard work of our technician (and a replacement power supply), the Micro is now back in working order

#VHSfeature In 2024, Matthew Bostock spotted a familiar object at a tip in Derby. Don’t fear, it wasn’t another ET cartridge - it was a BBC Microcomputer! He saved it from being recycled and it was subsequently donated to the NVM

Plastic overlays that stuck to the front of your TV screen via static electricity were developed to provide backdrops for each game. The included Roulette game might just be white dots circling the screen, but with the overlay it suddenly became an in-home casino (and in colour, no less).

Recognised as the first home videogame machine, the Magnavox Odyssey is a far cry from the consoles we know and love today. Because of the technical limitations of the time, the Odyssey could display only a limited selection of white dots and lines on TVs.

Whilst officially released in 1972, the machine’s design process began in 1966 when Ralph H. Baer had an idea to use an ordinary television set for purposes far beyond passive viewing, including playing interactive games.
