Most spiders—including this Cross Orb-weaver (Araneus diadematus)—are covered in hair-like structures called setae! They aren't just for looks: • Trichobothria feel air currents & web vibrations • Chemosensory setae taste/smell surfaces • Rigid spines grip silk & ward off predators!

Through a process called sclerotization, a soft, pale beetle inflates its body before enzymes cross-link proteins and chitin. Melanin deposits then darken and harden the matrix into waterproof armor Zophobas morio - Darkling Beetle

Crocodiles are more closely related to birds than lizards. This isn't new knowledge. Well it was to me just now. Looks like a lizard, must be a lizard? Nope. Further proof to not judge a book by the cover.

Scorpions glow under UV light. Compounds like beta-carboline in their exoskeleton’s hyaline layer absorb UV rays and emit a blue-green biofluorescence. Scientists think this glow helps them detect moonlight, find shade, or block the sun. giant hairy scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis)

My roommate the Cross Orbweaver (Araneus diadematus). Harmless to humans and pets, these docile spiders weave daily webs to catch mosquitoes, flies, and aphids. She has found a very comfortable spot near my house plants.

Hot gluing screen mesh to food bins. Makes great cheap critter keepers and breeding buckets. Sadly they just don't look as great as fancier critter keepers or nice display enclosures.

After 3 days of rain, I spotted this Pacific Folding-door Spider (Antrodiaetus pacificus) on the Upper Rim Trail at Silver Falls (9/5/26). These secretive spiders rarely leave their burrows, but wandering males emerge in late summer to search for mates.

Nola the Aphonopelma chalcodes digging for snacks. I though she'd only gotten a face full of dirt. But there is a dubia in all that.
