For now, we want to thank everyone who supported us, donated to us, challenged us, advised us, volunteered, created art, shared ideas, and believed that Nuremberg could be part of Worldcon's future. Thank you. 7/7

We hope to use the momentum, relationships and ideas that have grown around this bid to help build a stronger foundation for future European Worldcons. We are considering whether to bid again for a later year, but we have not made that decision yet. 6/

We still strongly believe that a Worldcon in Nuremberg could be a great Worldcon, and that building a stronger Central European Worldcon community matters for the future of Worldcon. Sadly, that will not happen in 2028. 5/

Nuremberg 2028 – Worldcon Bid @nuremberg2028.bsky.social · 31/05/2026

Our goal was never simply to be a winning bid. Our goal was to present the best German Worldcon we could imagine: a Worldcon in Nuremberg that would be transparent, welcoming, ambitious, and able to learn from other open community traditions. To do that properly, we need more time. 4/

But as site selection begins, we have to be honest: we are not at the point where we would need to be in order to ask the community to vote for us and be ready to carry the responsibility of winning. 3/

Since our launch at Smofcon, we have received wonderful support from volunteers, artists, experienced conrunners and communities across Central Europe. We are deeply grateful for that. 2/

We are sad to announce that we are standing down from the race for the 2028 Worldcon. This decision comes from a mix of personal, organisational and timing reasons. 1/

One of these mysterious gold hats was discovered in Bavaria in 1953 and is on display in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum (GNM) in Nuremberg. We couldn't help but notice its similarity to a certain well loved Worldcon award, and are taking that as a good omen!

Erlangen can be reached by bus or train from Nuremberg in just 20 minutes, and is worth a visit even when the Bergkirchweih isn't flowing! 4/4 (Image credit: CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 by Ke Chang on flickr.com)

The Bergkirchweih has long been a popular destination for the families of US GIs and has gained an international reputation — something like a smaller-scale, far more charming and family-friendly version of Oktoberfest. 3/4

This is a huge annual festival lasting many days, held among the sandstone beer cellars of Erlangen, near Nuremberg. A special Bergkirchweih beer is brewed especially for the event. 2/4

The area around Nuremberg has lots of festivals and events in the summer time, and we're hoping Worldcon can be part of that culture of celebration in 2028! For example, today marks the “Anstich” — the tapping of the first Bergkirchweih beer barrel — and the opening of the Erlangen Bergkirchweih. 1/

Nuremberg has been called the bratwurst capital of the world. Nürnberger Bratwürste are truly special, from their size (about the same as a finger), special recipe (marjoram is key) and history (we've been eating them since 1313)! Learn more at the link.

We all know the earlier you get your Worldcon membership, the better it is for both the convention and your wallet. So we’re offering a free attending membership to all members of the last German Worldcon: Heicon 1970. Which raises a question: Did Paul and 1/2r really plan this 58 years in advance?

Our bid chair, Florian, showing off the Tracht Man comics and action figure the Nuremberg in 2028 bid has donated for the grand prize of the Fan Funds Game Show. Tracht Man is Bavaria's only superhero!

A white man with a salt and pepper hair, beard and mustache hills an action figure in a bubble package. It says Tracht Man and the figure inside is wearing traditional Bavarian clothes and has a large beer mug as an accessory.

The Tracht Man comics spread out on a table. The one on top shows Tracht Man fighting a giant gingerbread man.

Michael Vogt, author of the "Der kleine Perry" SF comic series at Carlsen Verlag, is creating art for Nuremberg 2028! In this hand-drawing you can see all the stages of drawing a comic before colouring: The first pencil sketch, then the pre-inking blue drawing, and finally the inking itself.

Guten Morgen! As part of our launch activities, we're having a contest. We have a magnificent Nürnbird as a mascot, but they need a name! Give us your best suggestions - the winner will win a lifetime supply of Prestigeträchtig!

A cartoon version of the Nürnberg Coat of Arms with red-and-white diagonal strips on the right half and, instead of a black eagle on gold, a small purple bird with green eyelashes, feet and beak. This type of bird is known in nature as a Nürnbird.
