Some reliefs at Göbekli Tepe have a narrative character. Here, a lurking leopard is shown apparently ready to jump towards its prey, a boar. Pillar 27, Building C, 10th/9th millennium BC. #archaeology
A limestome pillar with a high relief/sculpture of a leopard. In front of the leopard, a low relief of a boar.

Paul Dirac's paper "The Quantum Theory of the Electron," in which he derived the relativistic equation for spin 1/2 particles like the electron, was submitted #OTD in 1928. It’s one of the most important results of 20th century physics, taking the deceptively simple form: i ℏ γ.∂ψ - m c ψ = 0 🧪 ⚛️
The title and opening of the paper read:

The Quantum Theory of the Electron.

By P. A. M. DIRAC, St. John's College, Cambridge.

(Communicated by R. H. Fowler, F.R.S.—Received January 2, 1928.)

The new quantum mechanics, when applied to the problem of the structure of the atom with point-charge electrons, does not give results in agreement with experiment. The discrepancies consist of " duplexity" phenomena, the observed number of stationary states for an electron in an atom being twice the number given by the theory. To meet the difficulty, Goudsmit and Uhlenbeck have introduced the idea of an electron with a spin angular momentum...Excerpt from section 3 of the paper, where Dirac shows that the equation behaves correctly under Lorentz transformations.

A team led by physicist Chien-Shiung Wu obtained the first experimental confirmation of “parity violation,” in the decay of Cobalt-60, #OTD in 1956. Her theory colleagues received a Nobel for the prediction, but she was left off the prize. 🧪 ⚛️ 👩‍🔬 Image: Smithsonian Institution Archives
