When I whine about a particular #AT40 week (looking at you, 1978-09-30) I try to counter with examples of why I think 1978 was nonetheless a superb year for music. Here's lps I can still go back to in '26 without fatigue setting in. I'm still working on my '78 list, so asap I'll be adding more...

Foreigner (admittedly I'm not a fan) with their "overcompensating" anthem 'Hot Blooded.' Thank dog the likes of Talking Heads (whose temporary SiriusXM ch. 145 is iconic, a must-listen for me even though I own all the CDs) were imho rescuing rock from the meh AOR generation by this time. #AT40

I have a dubious "winner" in my personal tiers for best to worst #AT40 of the 1970s. 1978-09-30 may be at the bottom of my lowest tier...imho of course. For one, only one cut on today's top 24 I own currently on CD. And only a select few faves below that (incl. Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, EWF).

As I turned up the volume for Stevie Wonder's 'You Haven't Done Nothin,' slamming Nixon's legacy (and rebootable for every GOP prez after that to increasing extents), I have to check out the bonus cuts Stevie dropped on the 50th anniversary of "Songs In The Key..." Heard that they were superb! #AT40

Like most if not all Rolling Stones hits (not to mention deep cuts), I like it re: 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll' #AT40 And just as no one predicted, the Stones dropped an acclaimed album in 2026! Don't retire just yet!

Watching the #WNBA playoffs as a 1974-08-17 #AT40 starts off on WOC night. Shout-out to the iconic Sly & The Family Stone with 'Time For Livin.' I'll keep an eye out on the countdown, although for the next 3 weeks my SiriusXM listening will be aimed at Ch. 145, the amazing Talking Heads channel!

Has any tune by Diana Ross given me deeper feels than her cover of a cut already done perfectly by Marvin & Tammi, 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough?' tbh there are a few others, but definitely this one! Aloha, enjoyed this '70 #AT40, have a great week to @porpster.bsky.social and all the hashtaggers!

Every time over the past 56 years since Edwin Starr's 'War' was a hit that I've reheard it, I loved the tune but hated that it was still relevant. And in 2026, it's relevant to an absolutely bonkers extent. #AT40

I didn't really follow Rare Earth beyond 1970, but their hits that year including this cover of '(I Know) I'm Losing You' are amazing, a potent blend of funk, rock, and even some psychedelic vibes (almost reminds me of the Chamber Brothers' 'Time' near the end). #AT40

After so many gems already spun on this #AT40, I wonder if I'm even worthy for an Aretha classic (Yes, play that song!), followed by a fave Chicago "jazz-rock" (lol) cut clocking in! 😏 Time capsule this 1970-09-26 program. Oh wait, I'm hearing it 56 years later ... I think I meant SiriusXM it!

As The Carpenters' 'Close To You' played on today's #AT40, I searched YT looking for several earlier versions. What I got was a reminder that the tune was covered often in Japan, and I'm a new fan of this recent remake by Fujii Kaze ... the tune has definite staying power! youtu.be/FZODnZqQK1M?...

I noticed that the sound quality of this 1970-09-26 #AT40 is much better than another recent 1970 program that almost sounded like it was taped off a transistor radio. For me, the hope is always that I will hear these shows in actual hi-fi sound nowadays, & not as they sounded in the low-fi AM era.

Another best-of-the-best on this 1970-09-26 #AT40 I was just beginning to listen to top 40 at this time so I didn't immediately connect that this Eric Burdon collab-ing with War to the iconic voice of The Animals. Love both, not to mention War, who still takes up space in my 2026 CD collection!

'It's A Shame', one of the Spinners' greatest! #AT40 One way that this 1970-09-26 program gives me nostalgic feels is how it reminds me of so many gems (alas, some coal) that were coming out of my transistor radio & giving me an education in pop culture music where I recall the lessons to this day!

Been listening to this stellar 1970-09-26 #AT40 from the #40 tune upward and appreciating the variety plus quality of most if not all of the hits. Right now Linda Ronstadt's voice at it's most beautiful/passionate is singing 'Long Long Time.' And the brilliantly funky 'Express Yourself' slays at #5!

I always think first of Sarah Vaughan first when the tune 'Misty' comes into the conversation. #AT40 Saw Sarah live co-billed with Mr. Sinatra in the late 1970s. Moving into the current decade, I love Samara Joy's take ... youtu.be/Cu0bL7DLQYE?...

I liked the chill smooth soul vibe to Smokey Robinson's 'Baby That's Backatcha' (#33) enough to buy the 45rpm back in '75. The vinyl is loooong-gone, but I still like it! #AT40 1975-06-07. Same story with Van McCoy's 'The Hustle' (#32). Another hit with flute!

Elvis brings a rock cut ('T-R-O-U-B-L-E') to #AT40 1975-06-07 (#40). Not a first-tier Presley hit, but I still give it a listen on occasion. I'd forgotten that Tanya Tucker had any pop hits. 'Lizzie And The Rainman' (#39)...not bad. Looking at tonight's WOC Billboard chart, a few gems here & there.

Two groups on this 1976-09-18 #AT40 (Chicago & Jefferson Starship) sounding lots different from when I first heard them circa '70. I like both of these tunes, but both were rapidly falling out of favor with me, especially the renamed (by me) Jefferson Buttcrack w/ 'We Built This Shitty" in the '80s.

Here we go, funk in thee house! Ohio Players' 'Who'd She Coo' (#19) and EWF's 'Getaway' (#18). Now in CD form, I still own every album by both groups here in 2026. Great arrangements on both jams, free of funk cliches (which is more than I can say for an upcoming hit w/'funk' in the title)! #AT40

A rare instance of a song growing on me over the last five decades. Hall & Oates with 'She's Gone,' I liked it back then but imho it kind of blended in with the crowd of pop hits in the '70s. And even today, my fave H&O cut is 'I Can't Go For That.' But 'She's Gone' is a winner for me in '26. #AT40

Success, Steve Miller! I wouldn't recognize you on the street. Now Steve Martin I would recognize (even if he was wearing an "I'm Not Steve Martin!" t-shirt). Never got deep into S. Miller's music but most of his hits during this era I don't mind rehearing on these #AT40 programs.

Even the #AT40 weeks that overall don't impress me much (today!) do have a few cuts that still blip on my 2026 radar. Heart's 'Magic Man' is one of them. Coming soon are a few more. In fact, Tavares' 'Heaven...' 👍. I'm not much into nostalgia, and Tavares sounds like nostalgia. Yet I like it!

Getting a few more 💤💤's in re: this meh 1976-09-18 #AT40 BroJo's 'Get The Funk' being an exception. I'm adding Olivia's 'Don't Stop Believing'' to my examples of why with very few exceptions I'm just not into her music. Now a cut I do like and was a part of Thursday's WOC discussion (George Benson).

I didn't get too deep into "smooth jazz," but a few albums cut before things became too generic are still favorites of mine even in 2026, incl. George Benson's "Breezin'" (w/a longer 'This Masquerade') to Grover Washington Jr,'s "Winelight" (w/the Bill Withers collab 'Just The Two Of Us'). $AT40

After a literally/figuratively "mid" section of this 1978-02-11 #AT40 (for my tastes, yours my differ), I'm back in an inspired mood via gems by Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire. And Paul Davis' ballad 'I Go Crazy' is imho above-average for pop ballads during this era. Good recovery, Casey!

Just not my type of rock, this late-70s-and-beyond AOR variety, from Foreigner to Lynyrd Skynyrd to Eric Clapton (most of his solo stuff...much prefer the earlier Cream & Derek/Dominos gems). otoh Elvis Costello, The Clash, Talking Heads, etc. saved rock's ass re: my album-buying habits. #AT40

I was just thinking about how funk was exiting from pop radio circa 1978 just as disco faded from view by the end of the '79. At least Con Funk Shun & Commodores hit the #AT40 with 2nd-tier funk bops the week of 1978-02-11. In the '80s I was still buying those evolving genres despite no pop airplay.

One of my fave, funky War cuts opens the 1978-02-11 WOC #AT40 Looking at the Billboard Hot 100 chart, pretty good overall. Natalie Cole shines at #38 ('Our Love'). If you're looking to hear Debby Boone's 'You Light Up My Life' (and if not, why not?), the tune fell from #32 to #56 this week.

Tuning to #AT40 to see if we get a "new" old program for 9am PDT. Turns out the fix is in and 1975-09-13 now appears. Missed the beginning but the first three cuts (B.T. Express, Graham Central Station, and People's Choice) are all top-tier soul/funk/r&b gems so I have them in my collection.
