Could they have done differently here? Yes, for example:
- Limit the redirection service to apps. There's no reason to do this on the open web (it just gives them the marginal benefit of saying "look for go.bsky.app to find our referrers").
- Load an embedded web view in the app if you want to send referrers.
- Embrace the open web more fully with progressive web apps or just a great mobile web experience.
This is just the most expedient way, externalizing the impact to end users.
