Today had new rare earth export data out. The US suffered the most decline in supplies in May. But Germany's supplies of magnets -- the main product from rare earths -- were slashed in half in both April and again in May. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

One problem with reporting on US policy: You have to decipher how far removed a seeming decision is from the president to give a sense for how final a decision is. Like this one from the US Trade Representative: Requires a disclaimer.

Story continues to argue that Germany is structurally more expensive than European peers now—possibly down to a lack of competition. The only exception: Germany is cheapest on Coca-Cola and relatively low on Nutella.

that they are interested in using the thinking developed in the most expensive strata of finance for the goal of undervaluing the dollar to "create manufacturing jobs in America" (Miran). They may just end up wreaking manufacturing jobs because economic orthodoxy was right.

I've read the Miran paper on the Mar-a-lago accord so you don't have to. It's a fascinating insight into the Trump-team economic thinking: It breaks so much with economic orthodoxy that it can lay out an aggressive plan to restructure the Dollar. Here's the critique of the exorbitant privilege...
