Now that I think about it, one of the better examples I can recall of a story treating a character with empathy, but without making any excuses for them, is Peter in Bly Manor, which gives me hope for Carrie.

I was about to ask who the 4th corner of the square was, because I completely forgot that Victor's brother was in the movie.

Yeah, I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about del Toro's adaptation, because on the one hand I can clearly see what it's going for and can respect that, but on the other it makes some choices that really annoy me, and the smol beanification of the monster is at the top of that list.

This is also true of Frankenstein's monster, which I don't think any adaptation really gets right.

I love the part where Latro is talking to the sphinx, trying to puzzle out that shape of the Earth, and eventually concludes that it must be flying through the air like a bird.

Also, all vagabond players are evil, but there's a special place in Hell for those who play the harrier.

nudraxon.bsky.social @nudraxon.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I will say, playing against the vagabond does give you empathy for what the town guards must be feeling whenever an adventuring party rolls into town.

This isn't even a specific strategy, it's just generally regarded as good play.

In Twilight Struglle, it's generally recommended to deliberately keeps cards in the deck that can cause your opponent to accidentally start nuclear war (because if your opponent starts nuclear war, you "win" because all the post-apocalyptic historians will blame them, I guess).

It's funny that there's a faction whose main point scoring method is literally called "oppress", and they're not even half as evil as the vagabond.

nudraxon.bsky.social @nudraxon.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Apparently there was a card which caused both players to take out a certain number of cards from their decks then play a sub-game with them (and since you could have multiple copies this could be done recursively). That card is now banned, for obvious reasons.

I have a friend who used to play competitively, and he said that in tournaments (usually best 2 out of 3) there used to be a strategy to win the 1st game, then deliberately drag out the 2nd so long that time runs out and it's counted as a tie (meaning the winner of the 1st game wins).

Yeah, I really liked the dynamic where Sevika was trying to use Junx as a symbol of rebelliom, and Jinx injtially wanting nothing to do with it. And then it felt like that got completely forgotten as soon as Warwick shows up.

I don't even disagree with your overall point that much, but I think the conflation between how the elite have trained their children to be memebers of the elite, and how we can make good and informed citizens shouldn't be taken for granted.

I mean, if you're going to criticize the "I'm just an engineer" mentality for this, I think it's also worth noting that "this is how the elite has reproduced itself for millenia" has also supported many systems of oppression and extermination. bsky.app/profile/bret...

Recently Youtube has been recommending me lots of short from Drop a Pin (the most common version is that they show a map with a certain country highlighted, and ask a bunch of people which country it is). It's simultaneously humbling, while still reminding me that I'm somehow way above average.

Me reading the Navy's win condition: Oh God, please tell me there's going to be an "or" and not an "and" at the end of this sentence. (Spoiler: it was an "and")
Win Condition
You win the game if you successfully occupy, annex, or puppet Australia, New Zealand, Hawaiʻi, the Phillipines, the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, Vietnam, Wake Island, Midway Island, and any one mainland US city all at once.

We're incredibly social. Aliens see the size of human cities and assume we must be a hive mind, because there'd be no way anyone could deal with the complexity of a society larger than 20ish individuals otherwise.

The thing is, for 99% of human history, that would have been a relatively safe assumption.

Fair enough. The Sith always had more non-humans, but in the FO they seem to be more integrated into the political leadership than under the Empire.

The human supremacy of the Empire/First Order was never made explicit in the live-action movies, but I think it's pretty clearly implicit in how few aliens we see among their ranks.

It's kind of interesting how prequels tend to have more freedom to make major changes to the status quo, precisely because everyone already knows where they're going to end up.

If the USSR was desperate for an alliance with the western powers against Nazi Germany, I'd say they had a golden opportunity to make one on September 1, 1939. Instead, well...

I'm reminded of the scene in The Godfather where Sonny mocks Michael for enlisting to fight in WWII, thus potentially dying for people unrelated to him. I'd thought this represented a clash between old values (loyalty to one's kin) and modern ones (loyalty to one's nation).

I found Kingmaker swung wildly between "braindead fights to go through on autopilot" and "actual torture unless you have the exact correct set of buffs applied", and it was almost impossible to get the difficulty to an enjoyable medium. So I don't think that position is that insane.
