They share photos of their lives. I share the totality of mine. Some of my allies have even followed me here, which is why I picked the handle “nude is normal.” Because it is, for me and I’d like to think, for all humanity. It can be a nerve-racking step, but one well worth taking.

With friends who were open, I received affirmative consent. They support my sharing because they accept me without conditions. Given our society’s general antipathy to nudity, or at least that of normal, realistic bodies, this has been the best way for me to integrate nudism in non-nudist spaces.

Occasionally, I’ve gotten others interested in trying it out. Eventually, the topic of photos comes up. When you have a relationship in which you text photos of your life, avoiding sharing nudist photography with these friends, to me, feels inauthentic. It cuts out a major part of my existence.

I believe it is important to cultivate our non-nudist allies so that we can share the fullness of our lives with people we care about. Over the last few years, I’ve carefully introduced my nudist reality to certain friends who I believed would be open to it. As hoped, they’ve been supportive.

There are many reasons to subscribe to @planetnude.co, but this survey and discussion is next level.

Nudism met many scheduling conflicts this summer, but gardening this weekend kicked off about 57 hours of living the way I wish I could 24/7. So good for my spirit.

I get the nude part, but camping?? My family knows not even to ask me about camping.

I made understanding my nudism a precursor to dating so my wife was on board from the start. I told family recently and they’re cool with it. I’ve not been nude around them but they know it’s possible at my home. But as a kid, I had no clue this community was a thing. Calvin was solace.

When I was a kid, there were no nudist examples in my life nor did I know that there was a name for how I preferred to be. Calvin was the closest I could get to having a “role model” that didn’t care about being nude. The philosophical underpinnings also sang out to me. Hence my Bsky banner.
A Calvin and Hobbes comic strip where Calvin is so disgusted with the waste humanity produces that he removes his clothes to join the other animals when Hobbes tells him he is proud not to be a human.

It’s good to be upfront and weed things out before things move too far along.

This summer I’ve run for the love of running. I’ve relaxed about what I eat. I did so without expectation; doing it because I wanted to, not with a result in mind. Body acceptance made my former tortures a pleasure. Where this goes, I don’t know. But self-hatred failed me. So why not choose love?

In my return here, I’ve posted photos I wouldn’t have before. I have a belly whether I’m sedentary or working out, restrictive dieting or indulging. It was so frustrating. Now, however, I’ve learned to accept my body as it is. Maybe it’ll change, maybe it won’t. That’s not my focus anymore.

This past spring, I snapped out of my three decade stupor. The negativity magically disappeared. I came to appreciate what my body was, what it could do. I stopped begging it to be something it was not. I stopped comparing myself to others. I stopped bingeing on judgment and angst.

For 28 years, I fed my body a steady diet of toxic thoughts. Food and exercise will not be effective if we hold negative thoughts. We’ll simply torture ourselves. During that time, nothing I did was good enough. There was always more I should be doing, more judgment to cast toward the mirror.

I feel the social media algorithms have gotten more predatory since I wrote this. And while I’ve had my struggles with body image and am sensitive to the content the Inadequacy Industry shoves at us, I’m now lovingly content inhabiting a normal aging body they’ve worked so hard to get me to hate.

Beauty is a word that commoditizes the body. It takes into account a viewer’s perspective rather than placing value simply on the body’s existence. The viewer is irrelevant. It’s why I don’t say “every body is beautiful” and choose to note that all bodies are worthy of respect. #bodyacceptance

Friends say they wish they could be as free as I can be. When you’re inherently nudist, the choice is embracing authentic identity and joy or suppressing yourself and causing pain. Freedom is a choice you can make. In nudism, the more the merrier, whether it’s who you are or something you choose.

With few local connections, I’ve returned to BlueSky to reconnect with my nudist/naturist community and our allies.
