What needs to be done? ▶️ Require screening of AI-generated genetic sequences before they can be synthesized. ▶️ Establish shared, rigorous evaluation standards for biological AI models before they’re deployed. ▶️ Strengthen international coordination on regulations for biological AI models.

When training the model for this study, the scientists chose not to include viruses that infect humans. This was voluntary safety measure. It was not required. Governments and organizations have been slow to develop guardrails and establish regulations for these emerging technologies.

Evo learned patterns in DNA sequences well enough to write new, functional genetic instructions on its own. While this research could have benefits in fighting antibiotic-resistant bugs, the technology could be misused to cause harm.
