That or the "social contagion" of not impregnating teenage girls as much (the vast majority of birthrate decline is explained by a decline in teen pregnancies, which is a very fucking good thing). A contagion that's apparently very emotionally damaging to some adult men.

Or perhaps I should say that it’s loser behavior, and everyone hates a loser.

It’s sickening and pathetic. And they barely seem aware that it makes them look like pathetic, gutless worms who don’t actually have any principles they’d defend. And everyone hates that kind of coward. So much of this hard and soft disavowal of “woke 1.0“ is just groveling for bigot crumbs.

Very interesting that threatening immigrants and trans people (people who have done nothing wrong, unlike Altman and his ilk actively ruining the world) with “enjoy the camps” fantasies is perfectly kosher per Bsky T&S, but this somehow isn’t… almost as if there’s some uneven treatment here.

“Burn all fraternities to the ground“ is the reasonable position.

It’s a view of art where it’s entirely consumption and status. When what truly matters is the person making it, the story they’re telling and how they told it. You can have artificial technical perfection, but without a person reaching out to tell me their story it means nothing—it’s boring.

It‘s kinda wild that “politics ball-knowers” haven’t clocked the fact thay Dems are so widely reviled because they’re viewed as gutless fucking worms with no principles that they’d defend. They cave to no pressure and shank their own people all the time and wonder why people don’t trust or like them

Seeing “serious” people saying “actually, shame never works and shouldn’t be used against people” is crazymaking. Profoundly ignorant of how people work. There’s this hope that MAHA types are savable because they’re hippie lib woo coded, but that’s both goofy and inaccurate.

It’s pure concern for the output and dollar value of the education and not the education as a value in itself. Broadly, I think we have a terribly broad issue of concern only with output rather than process, intention, or enrichment, which is pretty foundational to the AI push

A huge problem is that as a (capitalist) society, we’ve made education into less a learning space and more one for professional credentialing. Get degree entirely to get job, not to learn anything. And that attitude comes from both admin and from how we’re taught to think about ed in general.

Okay, so you’re just a fucking dullard. He fumbled a basic aspect of the job. The reason it’s rare is that if you’ve got the slightest control of your caucus it doesn’t happen. So either he has no control of his caucus and is therefore incompetent, or he allowed it and is therefore a collaborator.

“A pair of House Democrats voted to rescue the Republican legislative agenda Tuesday as GOP leaders faced an internal revolt, an extremely rare crossing of party lines that pushed a key procedural vote through a closely divided chamber.” Literally the first paragraph of the article.

neana @ntaelstrom.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Legitimately if the minority leader can’t whip their caucus to stay in line on votes, they’re an incompetent. For all her numerous faults, at least Pelosi kept the House Dems in line and didn’t allow breaks like this. This is extremely basic stuff.

neana @ntaelstrom.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
If he was anything more than an incompetent lickspittle and a corporate puppet, he’d have a modicum of control over his caucus. So either he doesn’t, or he approved their break and collaboration (The former aligns with statements made, but both are bad)

No one had to be convinced to adopt PCs, email, cell phones, smart phones, smart tvs, etc. Because they were useful and materially benefited or were enjoyable for people in some way. The “change” was fine and supported. Turns out people don’t like when your “change” sucks shit and makes life worse

The ability to go “huh, that sounds neat” and just dive right in and have your life changed is so crucial.

A course I took on African Literature was lifechanging for me, deeply formative to my politics (specifically discussions around colonialism using The Battle of Algiers as a jumping off point). I still think about books I read and movies I watched in a course called Oil and Water.

Unfortunately so many colleges are essentially run as hedge funds with educational arms, so a disturbing number of administrators are amenable to this bitcoin dipshit’s sort of thinking

We are chains of our own connected curiosities, and the more we’re able to explore them, deeply or in brief, the more links we forge. And not one of those links doesn’t matter. Even stories about dolls.

The things I learned in an elective on the economics of Ancient Rome applied to the things I learned in political science courses applied to the things I learned in a literature course about monsters applied to another course about Faulkner applied to ways I still see the world.

It’s an under-discussed and historic abomination that colleges are now seen as job training and certification facilities rather than places of learning, inquiry, and curiosity. Everything on earth is multidisciplinary, and learning how to think about one thing prepares you to think about many.

You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result… But also this is just like, the most pathetic sort of imaginative blinders. Like the author can’t imagine a world organized as anything but what it already is, so all alternatives are foreclosed.

neana @ntaelstrom.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Slightly crazymaking that this argument kinda boils down to: If we do exactly what we’ve done as human societies for all of history, surely we’ll get different results that don’t suck this time! Is there any actual mechanism by which this change happens? Of course not.

I grew up on the books, never really invested in them as a fandom or identity, found tons of better stuff to read (like, endless options), and ultimately found that Ursula K. Le Guin’s take was extraordinarily accurate.
Q: Nicholas Lezard has written 'Rowling can type, but Le Guin can write. What do you make of this comment in the light of the phenomenal success of the Potter books? I'd like to hear your opinion of
JK Rowling's writing style UKL: I have no great opinion of it. When so many adult critics were carrying on about the "incredible originality" of the first Harry Potter book, I read it to find out what the fuss was about, and remained somewhat puzzled; it seemed a lively kid's fantasy crossed with a "school novel", good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively
derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited

I will say there’s some slight gendered variation in the dialogue for DA2, though. Specifically I always liked Merrill as femHawke. For manHawke she’s very “starstruck schoolgirl can’t believe how wonderful you are,” while with femHawke it’s “you’re so perfect I love you and want to be you”

DA2 was full playersexual romanceable cast (Other than Sebastian who was straight and hyper-religious) DAO somewhat had defined sexualities (2 straight and 2 bi) before that.

If I could leave, I probably would, but also there are places in the US that I’d stick around in as well. Just depends. I don’t really feel tied to ”American” as an identity, though, other than as a mark of accountability for all the bad shit I’ve benefited from.

I spent a few years living in Korea and it really cemented how detached I feel (and have always felt) from America. Like it really sunk in how completely meaningless it all is to me. Places and people I like, but there are places and people I like equally all over the world

Morrowind is a triumph of atmosphere and texture. Just relentlessly committed to being weird and alien and letting its setting breathe. I weirdly have it tied in my head to Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines--RPGs with extremely strong and specific atmosphere and setting as the main selling point

I like having characters that are nice to hang out with--that's why I grew up on Bioware. For all their faults they always delivered pleasant companions I ding Skyrim for not being Morrowind, which is such a triumph of atmosphere and texture that Skyrim's generic style makes me sad by comparison.

Collapsing literacy, but also I think there’s something to be said for modern capitalism promoting a sort of endless consumer adolescence. Never grow past things, never stop consuming them—we’ll always make sure there’s another way to engage forever (fandom, expanded universes, etc.)

When you view politics as a team sport, policies and beliefs become little more than tactics to adopt and change when expedient, the way a coach changes formations or calls plays. Rather than accomplishing firmly held beliefs to better society being, y’know, the goal.

Really just feels like a lot of white dudes (mostly) adopting a framing that allows them to lash out at their lessers (minorities) for having the temerity to ask for respect. Which also allows them to project a new problem that doesn’t require that consideration.

Blocking Billiam Pencils is basically like putting a layer of protection between yourself and his radioactive field of general dipshittery and social media poisoning. It’s vital, and makes sure you only see it from a distance or through images where it can’t poison your brain too.

It’s such mush-brained, cowardly, equivocating slop to act like the earnestness of the bigotry somehow makes the material reality of it any better. I don’t fucking care whether a bigot is earnest or cynical. They’re still a bigot, and they do the same harm.

Also like… if I don’t care about my coworker who died I just sign the card circulating around the office and say nothing. If I dislike them I just sign the card circulating around the office and shittalk them with my other coworkers who hated them. I’m not going out of my way to eulogize them.
