They got to see animals like Darwin’s finches, giant tortoises, Galapagos sharks, manta rays, and Blue-footed boobies. They also visited the recent eruption sites (2005 & 2018) on Sierra Negra volcano. What an awesome trip! 🦈🐢🌊 (3/3)

minor erratum: yes, sphyrnids have *scroll* valves, not spiral - same basic idea about maximizing surface area, but different structure. Anyway, here are some of those cestodes found in that scroll valve yesterday:

Side note #4: Please don't try this at home! We work closely with NOAA and Florida FWC staff on these strandings, many of which are protected species. Your regular saltwater recreational fishing license won't cover your personal collections of jaws or other parts from these sharks. 10/11

Finally, we’ll prep the jaws for our institutional undergraduate teaching collection of jaws, which includes sharks, skates, and rays. Students will learn tooth morphology and other details. We’ll also add embryos to our teaching collection of whole specimens. 9/11

Side note #3: GHH is also one of those species that often dies when caught, with high at-vessel mortality rates in one NOAA study (tinyurl.com/yh3va5u3). Any mortality following release is additional! Their physiology makes gear modification changes to increase survival difficult. 8/11

Side note #2: Even with a CITES Appendix II listing, even with continued global declines in its population, GHH remains a species in the international shark fin trade (tinyurl.com/yc3as7s9; tinyurl.com/mr7nycxt). We should do something about that. 7/11

Determining the species composition of the shark fin trade in Singapore: a globally significant Southeast Asian market - Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries
Overfishing and unsustainable practices have caused drastic declines in shark populations worldwide; these decreases are largely attributed to the demand for shark products (e.g., fins and meat) and shark bycatch associated with the global fishing industry. In an effort to understand the species composition of the shark fin trade in Singapore – a globally significant trade hub, we collected and genetically identify a total of 6840 shark fins collected between January 2021 and February 2022. We then adopted a Bayesian modelling approach to understand how the identified species contributed to the overall trade within Singapore. The Singapore market appears distinct in terms of species composition when compared to the markets of Hong Kong and mainland China. In Singapore 81% of samples belonged to ten species, whereas, in Hong Kong and mainland China a single species dominated the trade. Of those identified in Singapore, the IUCN considers six to be threatened species and eight are listed in CITES Appendix II (in online). The differences in species composition between East and Southeast Asian markets suggest that different supply chains are sustaining these hubs. Given these differences, it is important that conservation, sustainable fisheries management and policy decisions are based upon the findings from multiple trade centres.

Side note #1: GHH in US waters was evaluated by NOAA in 2014 for inclusion under the Endangered Species Act, but as it's considered one global population, it didn't qualify for those additional US protections. (tinyurl.com/hsb7u6hz) 6/11

Thirdly, it also contained 19 near-term embryos, still connected with their umbilicus -- GHH is viviparous. We took tissue samples for trace element and multiple paternity studies by colleagues. Female GHHs breed only once every 2 years, so from a conservation perspective, this kind of hurt. 5/11

The second thing we do is collect the vertebrae (for age determination) and various other tissue samples for colleagues. We’ll examine the spiral valve ourselves for cestodes (tapeworms) and any external parasites, like this leech. 4/11

It's legal to fish for sharks! GHH is on the IUCN Endangered Red List, but it's also a species that can be legally retained in US federal waters. However, it's illegal to keep them in Florida state waters -- yes, a weird loophole. Anglers who accidentally catch one really should let it go ASAP. 3/11

NSU Fisheries and Avian Ecology Lab @nsufishnbirdlab.bsky.social · 01/02/2025
First, we might try to determine why it died. The hook – a size 16/0 circle – was still in the jaw with a wire leader versus a mono, which would prevent bite-offs. This suggests that someone was actually targeting sharks. Circle hooks usually lodge in the jaw rather than deep in the gut. 2/11
