Umm, where’s Putin in this picture?

It’s useful shorthand to identify a demographic that has particular needs in terms of social policy. No different to ‘OAP’. Again, what do you suggest as an alternative?

Do you expect them to write out “person between the ages of 16 and 24 not in education, employment, or training” in full every time? Acronyms are useful.

I think what people outside the UK don’t understand, is that the TERF/GC position in the UK is a left wing movement, driven by second wave feminism. It’s not primarily a right wing/religious conservative position as in other countries.

In my 56 years on earth I have never heard a man make a joke about incest. Ever. I understand that this is a Bernard Manning joke, which tracks, he was a foul 1970s comedian.

Nick Strugnell @nstrug.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
It’s a Bernard Manning ‘joke’. Given the age of people who even remember Bernard Manning I suspect their children are long grown up. It’s revolting, but Tice et al will just say that is how normal people speak and anyone who doesn’t find it funny is an effete metropolitan ponce.

What an absolutely lovely piece. I’m a couple of years older than Paula and grew up in a very different place - a grimy Northern industrial port - but so much in this article resonates.

True, the terrorism act only creates offences of overthrowing democracy by violent means. However the National Security Act covers overthrowing democracy by non-violent means. There are also several offences in the Representation of the People Act a d the Bribery Act which apply.

Oh, and also the National Security Act 2023.

Nick Strugnell @nstrug.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
I didn’t write that. Offences to undermine democracy are covered by the Terrorism Act 2000 not the Treason Acts. The Treason Acts are about offences against the Crown, not offences against the wider state (including parliamentary democracy).

Nick Strugnell @nstrug.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Because the offences of treason in the various Treason Acts that remain in force have extremely tight definitions, mostly to do with offences directed against the King himself (eg attempted murder of the monarch). The seditious treason offences only apply during wartime (eg the Lord Haw-Haw trial).

Recycling is a very poor second place to re-use, which is self is worse than reduce (ie not have any packaging in the first place).

Nick Strugnell @nstrug.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
But clearly not packaging waste. Why on earth do bananas need to be wrapped up in plastic? They come with their own excellent natural wrapping.

The ‘human beings in the room’ are the tiny percentage (less than 0.5%) of Green Party members who have the time and money to go to a conference in Brighton during the working week. It’s an insane way of making party policy and an open door to entryism by Your Party and Respect nutters.

‘Picky bits’ is revolting. I really hope it dies out soon, I can’t think of a more unappetising phrase to describe food.

What a disgusting little man. I used to have quite a bit of respect for him but it turns out he’s just a filthy money-grubbing shitbag who happily sold his soul to a deeply unpleasant company.

He’s let the party be overrun by single-issue entryists. Asleep at the wheel.

It wasn’t a dreadful speech. It was the start of the end of Militant and put Labour back on the path to electability.

Yep. Actually got into Terry Pratchett from reading a review of The colour of Magic in White Dwarf. And used to love Charlie Stross’s articles. Used to chat with Charlie on various usenet newsgroups in the 90s. Good times.

Still haven’t forgiven them for what they did to White Dwarf. Fuckers.

And a lot of ex-Respect members. The clearest parallel is Militant’s attempted takeover of the Labour Party in the 80s. Kinnock put that down, Polanski didn’t even show up.

Nick Strugnell @nstrug.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I accept that they in fact do. But mainstream reporting portrays them as focused on the ME and identity politics. This policy is just fuel to the fire. To me it just looks like a replay of Militant but Polanski is no Kinnock. He didn’t even show up. Hopefully the courts will rule it unlawful.

Still, this policy will be a disaster for Greens in areas like mine where their main opposition is the LDs and Cs. The Gs have so much potential in rural and semi-rural areas and they have blown it with this policy that will put off voters worried about habitat loss, pollution and climate change.

Ellie Chowns seems very much in the mould of Caroline Lucas. Rock solid on the environment. Our local greens are similar and don’t seem to have been distracted by identity politics and the Middle East, possibly because there’s no votes in either locally.

I guess it’s not being reported on then, every time I see them on the news it’s about non-core issues.

The entryism is off the scale. Can’t remember the last time I heard a Green MP at the national level talk about ecology, conservation, habitat loss, climate change etc. Particularly bad for local Greens in rural areas who are still very much focused on proper Green issues.

They aren’t. They hated the 1970s - it’s a great dog whistle to older voters.

Constant strikes, power outages, and the three day week weren’t great. UK industry was on its knees from lack of investment dating back to the post-war period and the horrific mismanagement of Marshall plan funding (spent on propping up a failing empire rather than re-tooling).

Nick Strugnell @nstrug.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
They’re talking to their core voters who very much do remember the 1970s and associate it with strikes and the three day week (and the sainted Thatcher) The median age of Tory voters is 60-odd.

Finally listening to it in full! What a great album, and John’s playing is incredible - would be great if he did some interviews, I would love to hear more about his influences and gear.

No that’s not possible. No UK government, least of all a Labour government, would countenance this. Or indeed have the ability to do it.

The most likely explanation is it’s scumbags nicking red diesel. If there was even the slightest suspicion of terrorist or state actor involvement they would not have been bailed.

Civil action is always an option if someone has committed a tort against you - which certainly seems to be the case here.

Where are you?? Thats incredibly expensive. I’m in the UK which has some of the most expensive electricity in the world but $5 (£3.85) would buy me 75kWh.

The EA is clearly not fit for purpose but I don’t understand why the Goulds have not pursued a civil action against Morgans Farm and the waste company. It’s a shocking story.
