Southampton finished 6th in 2016, missing out on Champions League football by one place. City finish 5th. Southampton's squad gets picked apart by bigger entities and the club goes into a protracted decline.

Southampton were outplaying City in the cup semi-final last season and they brought on £180million of substitutes to win it 2-1. The amount of joy they've robbed football fans of with their tedious sportswashing project hard to quantify.

I think while fair enough Verhoeven makes a satire on fascism having grown up under Nazi occupation just calling the book fascist misses all of the specifics of the American militarist paranoid cold war imaginary it comes from

I see motorists run red lights every day. I saw at least two while cycling in to work this morning. I think the only reasonable explanation for never seeing it in two decades of driving is confirmation bias

I say this as a massive Le Carre fan, while he himself obviously went hardcore Remainer later in life it's not hard to see what would resonate in the narratives of postwar British international decline, incompetent (Labour Party-coded) bureaucrats, jolly good chaps valiantly going on etc etc

The number of taxis in the country has gone up 85% since 2005 solely because Uber has used massive investor capital to stimulate demand and capture market share ready for the eventual robotaxi rollout. These jobs only existed because of this VC largesse and were doomed from the start

Haven't been back in the city for 12 years, since the year my dad died. Went to the Ashmolean and they were selling old copies of the catalogue from the exhibition I took my dad to the same year. He really enjoyed it. Quite cut up by this tbh.

Anyone who has cycled a meaningful amount in this country knows there are plenty of junctions where waiting for the green light means putting yourself at increased risk. A road system that makes vulnerable road users regularly have to make that choice is obviously a bad one!

There was a point at which the default left response to this would have been "the education system's obsession with exam results from primary school is bad for children, but especially those with learning differences" and not "medication is good because it improves grades"
